‘Counting On’: Jana Duggar Lowered Her Standards for a Future Husband — ‘I Used to Be a Little More Strict’

Counting On fans can’t stop speculating on Jana Duggar’s dating life. As the oldest Duggar daughter, most followers didn’t expect Jana to stay single into her 30s. The women in the family usually get married young after short, parent-approved courtships.

Since Jana isn’t married yet, it leads fans to question why. Is she incredibly picky? Is she just patient? Is she being held captive by her parents, who need help raising the younger kids? Recently, the 30-year-old has been vocalizing her reasons for remaining unmarried and living at home.

In one statement, Jana even said she’s resigned to lowering her standards for picking a potential mate.

The Duggars approach marriage differently

While most American adults choose their spouses after dating many potential partners, the Duggars take a different approach. The strict fundamentalist Christian family avoids dating and instead meets potential life partners via courtships.

“The main difference between courting and dating is setting boundaries for yourself so that you don’t cross over those,” Jill Dillard explained on 19 Kids & Counting in 2014. If a gentleman was interested in pursuing marriage with Jana, he’d need to speak with family patriarch Jim Bob Duggar first.

“If a man pursuing a girl’s heart, definitely the guy needs to talk to the girl’s father,” Jessa Duggar explained during a video. “So for us, guys would approach our dad and talk to him about that, kind of make their interest known.”

The reality star said she’s sick of fans constantly asking about her romantic status. Jana explained that she’s happy with her life and willing to wait for the right person to come along.

Most fans are convinced Jana has been in a failed courtship, specifically with family friend Lawson Bates. This deduction came from a few flirty Instagram comments plus the fact that both families share the same values. This rumor remains unconfirmed.

Jana is looking for true love that lasts forever. But she’s willing to compromise on one dating standard that she used to consider non-negotiable. As the 30-year-old told People, she’s ready to start looking for potential partners who live in different zip codes.

“I used to be a little more strict,” she says. “I felt like, I just want to find someone that would either move to Arkansas, or is already from here, but I think as time has gone on, I’ve found I do love to travel more than I thought I did.”

Her travel interests have helped expand her perspective and envision herself living elsewhere. Jana continued, saying: “So now, it’s more like, okay, if I really love the guy, I’ll follow him to the ends of the earth. I’ll want to go wherever he is. So far I just haven’t found that one.”

Jana says she’d move away if her future husband wanted to

Many Duggars live in their home state of Arkansas, frequently gathering in the family home for holidays and other special celebrations. But some adult children moved away, too. Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo live in Los Angeles after spending some time living in Texas.

And Jana is willing to do the same. “When he comes, he doesn’t have to stay in Arkansas,” she says. “It’s just that I’ve got to love you so much that I will go with you.”

If that’s what Jana wants, then hopefully her special partner comes along soon. Follow along when Counting On airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET.
