‘Counting On’: Jana Duggar Reveals That the Duggar Kids Might Have More Complicated Love Lives Than We Thought

When it comes to relationships, the Duggars don’t mess around. Once a member of the family announces a courtship (their version of dating), an engagement is almost sure to follow soon after, and a wedding will happen within a few months. At least that’s how it looks from the outside. But in a clip from an upcoming episode of Counting On shared with Us Weekly, Jana Duggar revealed that behind the scenes, things might be a bit more complicated.

At 29, Jana is the oldest unmarried Duggar. Since most members of her siblings have married relatively young, her single status has caused a lot of speculation. Now, she’s addressing why she isn’t married head-on.

“There can be that pressure [to get married],” she admitted to a Counting On producer. But she went on to say that she’s not sitting around feeling sorry for herself for being single.

“If I was sitting here waiting to get married, I think that would be more depressing but instead, I really look at this as, OK what are other things that I could be doing right now that maybe I can’t do later?” she said.

Not every Duggar courtship leads to marriage

In the Counting On clip, Jana also shed some light on the Duggar courtship process. She revealed that “a number of guys” have pursued her but that “nothing’s worked out.” She also mentioned that not every courtship leads to marriage.

“Different ones of us have been in relationships, courtships, whatever you want to label it as,” she explained. “Of course, it doesn’t always end in marriage and that’s OK,” she adds. “You have to sometimes talk to someone, get to know someone and realize, you know what, it doesn’t have to end in marriage.”

The Duggars don’t usually talk about their failed courtships

The news that not every Duggar relationship works out might come as a bit of a surprise to some fans, since we rarely hear about a Duggar courtship that doesn’t end at the altar. (Josiah Duggar’s relationship with Marjorie Jackson is an exception.) But apparently, the Duggars aren’t so different from other people in that they sometimes start a relationship with someone only to decide that it isn’t going to lead to something more serious. They just try to keep their unsuccessful courtships under wraps.

Jana — who has been linked to everyone from Bringing Up Bates star Lawson Bates to former NFL player Tim Tebow — didn’t elaborate on which Duggars had courtships that didn’t work out or why. But in some cases, a possible courtship might fizzle because of another sibling. Before she married Joseph Duggar, there were rumors that Kendra Caldwell was actually courting his younger brother Jedidiah, for example.

So far, Josiah is the only Duggar who has opened up about ending a relationship. When he and Marjorie broke up, he told In Touch Weekly that “she didn’t feel it was the right timing.” But none of the other siblings have shared specific details about past relationships or shared why they ultimately ended before marriage. But from the sound of things, finding “the one” can be as difficult for a Duggar as it is for anyone else.
