‘Counting On’: Jessa Duggar Broke One Major Rule When Naming Her New Baby Daughter

It’s a girl for Jessa and Ben!

The Duggar family had something even more exciting than picnic plans over Memorial Day weekend—Jessa Duggar and her husband, Ben Seewald, welcomed their third child on Sunday, May 26. Jessa was the first Duggar woman due in a long line of expectant moms in the family.

Other pregnant Duggar women include Anna Duggar, Kendra Caldwell, Anna Duggar, Joy Forsyth, and Lauren Swanson are all pregnant. Duggar cousin Amy is also having a baby this year. Fans are expecting pregnancy announcements from Abbie Burnett and Jill Duggar any day now.

As with any birth, the announcement of Jessa and Ben’s new child was met with joy and excitement. But they did make one unusual decision with her name.

Most Duggar children have biblical names

While it’s not a hard and fast rule, many of the Duggar family names have religious or biblical inspiration. Jessa’s son Spurgeon is named after a 19th-century Baptist preacher who both Ben and Jessa followed closely over the years. “He had a big impact on our lives, and his writings and sermons and books are still around today,” Ben said of their decision to choose such a one-of-a-kind name. His middle name “Elliot” is the last name of a missionary the couple admires.

Fans have expressed their disdain towards the name Spurgeon because it’s so unique and some say, too weird. Charles Spurgeon was also vehemently anti-Catholic which made some of the Duggar’s Catholic fans upset about the name choice.

Ben and Jessa were excited to welcome a baby girl

In a family with so many boys, it was exciting for Ben and Jessa to have a baby girl. Before they knew the gender, the couple said they’d be thrilled to have a daughter but would also have a lot to learn.

“We would absolutely love it if we found out we were having a girl — though we’ve joked that we’d be starting from square one and might have to learn a few things,” Jessa wrote on their family blog.

The baby has a unique name

While Spurgeon is the most unusual name in the family (their other son is named Henry), fans were slightly surprised that the couple chose to name their new baby Ivy Jane Seewald. According to The Bump, Ivy is derived from an Old English word that means fidelity and eternity.

It was only a little shocking because fans expected Ben and Jessa to choose a more biblically based name, or at least something with religious inspiration. So far, the couple has not revealed why they chose the name Ivy.

The Seewalds are happily adjusting to their new addition

Ivy Jane was born at home on May 26 weighing 7 pounds and 14 ounces and measuring 20.5 inches long. As the couple told UsWeekly: “She feels so tiny compared to her siblings!”

Spurgeon and Henry each weighed closer to 10 and 9 pounds.

“We’re so grateful to God for this precious gift. She is already so loved. Her big brothers adore her,” they said after her arrival.

We wish all the best to the Seewald family!
