‘Counting On’: Jill Duggar Posts Photos of Her Son’s Controversial First Day of Public School

It’s official: Jill Duggar’s son, Israel Dillard, has started public school. Earlier this year, Duggar made the controversial decision to defy her parents’ family rules and send her older son to the town’s public school district — a place where he’ll meet people of many different backgrounds and beliefs. Duggar recently posted photos from the big day.

Jill Duggar shocked fans when she enrolled her son in public school

In February 2020, Duggar made the decision to enroll her older son, Israel, in public kindergarten, breaking the traditional homeschooling technique with which her mother raised the whole family. Duggar and her parents have seemingly been at odds ever since she and husband Derick Dillard left Counting On, and it’s unclear if the move had anything to do with the reportedly rising tensions.

Fans were excited to learn that Duggar was opening her kids up to different people and views; the Duggars have said in the past that Michelle and Jim Bob only allowed their kids to be around friends with chaperones to ensure nothing negative was discussed.

Duggar just posted photos from her son’s big day

Duggar hasn’t held back from sending her son to school, despite that the coronavirus pandemic is not yet under control in most parts of the country. On Aug. 24, Duggar posted photos of her son’s first day, showing the excitement of enrolling him in something none of his mother’s family has experienced. “Happy first day of school for these two!” Duggar wrote, posting photos of Israel alongside her husband. (Dillard started his last year of law school on the same day.)

Fans were quick to show support for Duggar who, at press time, had not received any words of encouragement from her parents or siblings on the post. “You have made a good choice for your son,” one fan wrote. “Well done for letting them go to school!” another user added. Others talked about their own experiences sending their children to school, including ways they’ve gotten involved as parents.

Duggar and Dillard have been breaking away from Duggar family tradition

Once Duggar and Dillard left the family’s reality show, they started making their own decisions about their values. Duggar began wearing pants, which is something the kids were not allowed to do growing up. She later cut off her long hair, which she’d had as a child, and now has even been spotted wearing shorts.

Dillard has occasionally spoken out about his wife’s family, suggesting the picture-perfect lifestyle they paint for themselves is far from the truth about who they are behind closed doors.

Some think Dillard will go through with writing a tell-all book

Over the past couple of years, Dillard has hinted more and more about what goes on behind the scenes of the Duggar family. He has suggested that Jim Bob controls the family’s finances, and butting heads with him is what caused Dillard and Duggar to fall out of her parents’ good graces.

Dillard has toyed with the idea of writing a tell-all book about the family and has also said that his wife needs special permission to visit her parents’ house. Fans and critics alike have expressed interest in reading a tell-all, though it’s not confirmed if it’s actually happening.
