‘Counting On’: Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar Celebrate ‘Miracle’ Daughter Josie’s 10th Birthday

Yesterday was a big day in the Duggar household. Youngest Duggar daughter Josie turned 10 on Dec. 10. Mom Michelle and dad Jim Bob shared an update about her birthday lunch on Instagram, noting that it was an extra-special celebration because she’s their miracle baby.

Josie and her parents had lunch at Cracker Barrel

Josie, her parents, and several other Duggar girls headed to one of the family’s favorite restaurants for a celebratory meal.

“Enjoyed a special birthday lunch at Cracker Barrel!,” her parents shared on the Duggar family Instagram account.

“Josie is full of laughter and spunk, and keeps us young!” they added.

Birthday lunches are a Duggar family tradition. With 19 kids, big birthday parties would have gotten crazy, so Jim Bob and Michelle came up with a different way to make the day special for their kids. The birthday boy or girl gets a meal out at a favorite restaurant, which gives them a chance to spend one-on-one time with mom and dad.

On social media, Jim Bob and Michelle noted that Josie’s birthday was extra special because of the circumstances of her birth.

“Every child is a miracle, but Josie is one we give special thanks to God for today!!” they wrote.

“We still hear from so many of you how you have prayed for her since birth and it is very humbling! Thank you! We know God has great plans for this little girl,” they added.

As long-time Duggar family fans will remember, Josie was born three months premature. Mom Michelle was diagnosed with preeclampsia (a condition that causes dangerously high blood pressure and can be fatal for both mother and baby) and doctors performed an emergency C-section at 25½ weeks.

When Josie was born she weighed just 1 lb., 6 oz. Soon after her birth, she developed a bowel perforation, but fortunately, doctors were able to treat the condition without open surgery, noted an article in People

The Duggars have called Josie’s birth ‘the most difficult time’

Though Josie is healthy now, the time after her birth was challenging. Her parents have said they are incredibly grateful to the medical team that was able to keep their daughter alive.

“We are so thankful for everyone’s prayers and all of the doctors and nurses at Arkansas Children’s Hospital that saved her life,” they wrote on Instagram in a post marking Josie’s ninth birthday in 2018. “That was the most difficult time in our family’s life, but by God’s grace Josie and our whole family made it through!”

After Josie’s birth, Michelle, who was then 45 years old, became pregnant with a 20th child. Sadly, she had a miscarriage in her second trimester. Jim Bob and Michelle named the baby Jubilee Shalom. The loss was difficult, she later told People

“I feel like my heart broke telling my children,” she said. “They have all been so excited about this baby and looking forward to April coming around and having a new little one in our arms. That was the most difficult. The Lord is the giver of life and he can choose when that life is ready to go on and be with Him.”
