‘Counting On’: Jinger Duggar Says She Talked to Her Parents About Wearing Pants

The Duggars are officially back with a new season of Counting On, and fans are loving what we’re learning about the family so far. While fan favorites like Jessa and Jana, as well as lesser-known Duggars like Jeremiah and Jedidiah, are getting plenty of screen time, we’re all still loving following Jinger Duggar’s journey. As we know, she’s the first family member to take the plunge and move all the way out to the West Coast with her husband, Jeremy Vuolo, and her daughter, Felicity. And we’re loving getting all the insight about her move.

Fans who follow Jinger on Instagram also likely noticed that her style has totally changed over time. And on the show, she addressed how she talked to her parents about ditching the long skirts in favor of pants. Here’s what she said.

The Duggars are well-known for their dress code

From homeschooling to ignoring pop culture to staying modest via their dress code, the Duggars — especially the women — have rarely strayed from the rules growing up. Now that many of them are older and married, they’ve been able to get a bit more liberal with their choice of dress. But when they were younger, the Duggar ladies were to wear long skirts instead of pants, shirts with a high neckline that covered the shoulders, and absolutely nothing form-fitting.

In the book Growing Up Duggar, Jana, Jessa, Jinger, and Jill wrote how they even had a code word they uttered when a provocatively-dressed woman would walk by them. They would whisper the word “Nike” to “signal to the boys, and even to Dad, that they should nonchalantly drop their eyes and look down at their shoes as we walk past her.”

Jinger’s fashion has changed dramatically since moving to Los Angeles

Jinger, along with a few of her sisters, was wearing pants and more stylish clothing before she made her journey to Los Angeles. But now that she’s in the fashionable city, it’s clear the environment has worn off on her. On Jinger’s Instagram, we can see she’s sporting sleeveless tops, skirts that hit above the knee, heels, and plenty of beautiful dresses. And she’s not dressing Felicity overly-modest, either.

We can’t forget that Jinger also went out on a limb and bleached her hair. She debuted the new look on June 6, and it looks like her siblings and fans love it, too. Jessa commented that she adores the new look, and another fan added, “Making yourself into the California Girl Next Door. You look great.”

Jinger said she spoke to her parents about changing her wardrobe

Jinger has long been known as the Duggar daughter most likely to make a rebellious move, as her Los Angeles move proved she’s going to do what she wants whether her parents approve or not. But when it comes to changing up her wardrobe, it appears she did seek some guidance from Michelle.

“I know a lot of people have had different speculations, or ideas, or whatever, about conflict between us over the matter of pants. We had conversations before I started wearing pants and just shared my heart with them where I saw the Lord leading me,” Jinger said on Counting On. “I was really grateful for their response … they said just to walk with the Lord … and to seek to honor Him and to maintain modesty, and so I think I’m really grateful for their hearts and how they’ve just instilled that in us kids.”

Michelle also added that it’s fine if her children walk a different path than she did. As long as they’re following their calling from God, that’s the most important thing to the mother of 19!
