‘Counting On’: Yesterday Was National Pickle Day, and the Duggar Family Was Freaking Out

Don’t come between the Duggars and their pickles. Though the famously large family has many quirks, from their ban on kissing before marriage to their refusal to celebrate Halloween, one of the strangest is their endless enthusiasm with pickles.

The Counting On family’s obsession with the salty snacks is well-documented. So when National Pickle Day rolled around, you can bet that the Duggars were pretty excited.

The Duggars celebrated National Pickle Day

“It’s National PICKLE Day!! Kind of a big dill around here! ” the Duggar family posted on their official Instagram account on November 14. Then they asked people to share their favorite kinds of pickles.

Anna Duggar also posted about pickles, sharing a photo of one of her kids munching on a pickle spear and asking “Have you had your pickle yet?!!!”

Why do the Duggars love pickles so much?

Where does the Duggars’ love of the vinegary snack come from? It’s not entirely clear, but daughter Jessa had a theory that it all went back to mom Michelle Duggar.

“The Duggars love pickles. I think it probably started that when my mom is pregnant she craves pickles, that is the one thing. Every time we see her eating pickles we say ‘Are you pregnant?’” she said in a 2016 Counting On episode

The pickle fixation apparently extends to the youngest generation of Duggars. Jill Duggar has admitted that she bribes her son Israel with pickles to take her Instagram photos. The mom of two has also joked about drinking pickle juice, though she made it clear to her followers on social media that she wasn’t sipping the stuff because she was pregnant.

Pickles even play a major role in the Duggar family’s Christmas celebration. While the family doesn’t have a tree or include Santa in their celebrations, they do exchange gifts. And one of those gifts is always a jar of pickles. Each child receives a personalized goodie bag with beef jerky, their favorite flavor of chips, and some pickles.

“Almost all of us like pickles, but each one likes a different kind,” Michelle told Focus on the Family in 2017. “Same with the Pringles and the beef jerky. Christmas is the one time of year when every child gets their favorite flavor of each treat.”

Pickles even make an appearance at Duggar weddings. Joy-Anna Duggar reportedly served them when she wed Austin Forsyth in 2017. She even had a friend serve as the “official pickle cutter.”

Not only do the Duggars wrap up jars of pickles as gifts, but they also put pickles on their pizza, as they revealed in a 2015 episode of 19 Kids and Counting.

“That’s a Duggar thing, we just all love pickles,” son James said in the episode.

Want to snack on a Duggar-approved pickle? The family has shared a recipe for their own homemade pickles on their website.
