‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ Star Rachel Bloom Made A Big Announcement At the 2019 Creative Arts Emmys

While some actors shy away from speaking out at award ceremonies, others relish the chance to make an announcement on their own terms. Such was the cast for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star Rachel Bloom at the 2019 Creative Arts Emmys ceremony this weekend. Here’s what she said.

How did Rachel Bloom become famous?

For many years, Bloom was known primarily for her YouTube videos, which were original, satirical songs she composed and sang, beginning with 2010’s “F*** Me, Ray Bradbury.” In 2013, Bloom released an entire album of musical comedy tracks.

Also during this time, Bloom performed with the Upright Citizens Brigade, and roomed with Broad City star Ilana Glazer. She got her start in TV writing for Robot Chicken and did voices for the show, along with BoJack Horseman.

Bloom starred in ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ on the CW

Despite accumulating quite a few credits, Bloom was generally unknown to most until her series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend premiered on the CW in 2015. Bloom starred in the musical dramedy as Rebecca Bunch, a lawyer who, while dealing with a mental health crisis, leaves her high-powered NYC job for West Covina, CA.

In addition to starring in the series (and singing multiple songs per episode), Bloom was also the co-creator, an executive producer, and a writer for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Additionally, she co-wrote much of the music for the show.

Over its four-season run, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was nominated for many awards. In the past, it won at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards just two awards, for Outstanding Choreography and Outstanding Singer-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series.

This year, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has been nominated for three Emmys, and so far, it has taken home two of those. At the Creative Arts Emmys, presented on Sept. 14, 2019, it won again for Outstanding Choreography for two numbers and for Outstanding Music and Lyrics for the song “Antidepressants Are So Not a Big Deal.”

The second award went to Bloom and her song-writing team, which includes Adam Schlesinger and Jack Dolgen. All three were on hand at the ceremony to accept their award. But Bloom had a special surprise in store.

At the press conference backstage after accepting the award, she was asked what she’s working on. She replied, “I’m pregnant, so that’s what’s next for me.” Bloom continued, “I’m three months pregnant, so I get to tell my child that she was with me when this happened, which is really f***ing cool!”

Is Rachel Bloom married?

Unlike her Crazy-Ex Girlfriend character, Bloom’s love life is very stable. She has been married to comedian, writer, and producer Dan Gregor since 2015. Gregor was a writer and consulting producer on the show, and also played Dr. Roth (and his twin brother, also Dr. Roth) in a few episodes.

Gregor himself is keeping himself busy in the industry. He has written a number of screenplays and scripts for Disney, including Magic Camp and Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers. There are no release dates for these projects yet.
