Crazy Things Actors Said About Being Directed by Their Spouses
It’s pretty common for actors to fall in love with their co-stars on set. But actors also fall in love with their directors while working on a project. Many actor and director relationships have become something more and even made it down the aisle after a project is done. Some spouses even reunite to work again after they’ve gotten married.
But this could work for better or worse for the project and relationship. Some couples got into weird fights while working together. Others revealed weird ways they tried to keep it professional on set.
So what are the crazy things people have said about working together? Here are 15 crazy things actors said about being directed by their spouses and longtime partners.
1. Kristen Bell said Dax Shepard wanted her to have less cleavage in CHIPS
Dax Shephard directed and starred in the movie adaptation of CHIPS. He also cast his wife, Kristen Bell, as a housewife that has a sexy scene coming out of a pool in a bathing suit. In preparation, the two disagreed about her appearance. Bell just had a baby, so she wanted to take advantage of the timing.
“When I came out with a chest that size, he said, ‘It looks great, but you need to zip the bathing suit up a little bit,'” she told E! News. “And I was like, ‘Honey, I get these one time. I want a lot of cleavage. I want this to look aggressive.’ … it was the one disagreement we had on set.”

2. Leslie Mann said an actor once hit on her after doing a kissing scene directed by Judd Apatow
Leslie Mann often stars in her husband, Judd Apatow’s movies. But she is also usually someone else’s love interest. The two are probably used to this dynamic, but Mann shared that one time an actor took things too far.
“Paul [Rudd] is like my brother so I don’t think Judd feels threatened at all by Paul,” she told the Telegraph. “But there was one actor — I’m not going to say his name — who I had a kissing scene with and afterward he asked me if I wanted a ride back but he didn’t ask Judd, even though Judd was standing right there. It was really weird.”

“She is very different,” Jovovich told the Los Angeles Time of her character. “And for that, I literally had to leave myself at the door because I couldn’t bring any habits — to the point of saying, ‘Don’t breath before you laugh.’ Just one of those things. It’s the weirdest thing in the world, but Luc [Besson, director of Fifth Element] was like, ‘Don’t breathe when you laugh.'”

She then continued, “With Sam [Mendes], because I didn’t know what he was going to be like as a director … I sort of guessed and hoped that I’d have certain things revealed to me, but there was always the element of the unknown about him. But I did feel extremely understood.”

“Tim barely gets a word out,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “He mimes. He sketches sentences in the air — you have no idea what he’s saying but you know what he wants.”

Really! Oh, my God! I can actually love and live — not subvert anything, not apologize for anything, not hide anything.”
