Crazy Things Celebrities Have Done in Their Nude Scenes
There are many actors who have shot a sex scene sometime in their career. Some of these stars have also opened up about the whole experience being awkward because they had to pretend to have sex in front of a cameraman, the director, and their on-screen partner.
These nude scenes can also be awkward because they involve props that the audience doesn’t see, or require crazy preparation beforehand, like the actors getting body piercings. In fact, a lot of props like pantyliners and prosthetics are used to make a scene look realistic. So what did these actors have to do to film their on-screen trysts? Here are 10 crazy things celebrities have done in their nude scenes.
1. Mark Wahlberg used a prosthetic penis in Boogie Nights, and kept it
In this movie, Mark Wahlberg plays a young man who enters the porn industry. The role involved multiple sex scenes, but one of the most memorable was one that ended with a shot of Wahlberg’s penis. However, it wasn’t really the actor’s penis, but a prosthetic that he ended up keeping.
The reason for this is because the character is supposed to have a 13-inch penis. The prosthetic is made of plaster and to complete it, Wahlberg wore a merkin. So where is the prosthetic penis now?
“I used to keep it in my desk drawer,” Wahlberg revealed on Late Night with Seth Meyers. “And I’d take it out and slap my friends in the face with it. I don’t keep many things from my movies, but that just seemed to have personal significance.”
In other Boogie Nights scenes, Wahlberg created a bulge in his pants using women’s stockings filled with bird seed, according to the Vulture.
2. Kate Mara wore pasties with Kevin Spacey’s face on them in House of Cards
The actress played the reporter who had an affair with the politician, Frank Underwood. She decided to play a funny prank on him for their love scene. “I tried to get him to laugh by wearing pasties with his face on them,” Mara told Playboy. “Of course, because Kevin wants to win whatever the game is and because he always wins, he did not laugh. He waited until the director said ‘Cut’ and then he laughed. Kevin has an amazing sense of humor, but he’s also a great professional and he’s really f***ing good at it.”
3. Emmy Rossum wore a “vag pad” for her Shameless sex scenes
The actress often had to bare it all for her sex scenes in Shameless. But even when she looks fully naked, she actually isn’t. “We like it to be realistic, but not real, so I wear something that I have called the ‘vag pad,'” she explained on Chelsea Lately. “It’s like a little triangular, kind of, panty liner that you stick to yourself.”
According to Rossum, the men also wear a type of barrier. “The guy wears, like, a sock.”
4. Kate Winslet bounced on an exercise ball for her sex scene in Romance & Cigarettes
In most scenes, actors really do lie on top of each other for their sex scenes. But according to the Romance & Cigarettes director, John Turturro, Winslet sprained her ankle and therefore couldn’t get on top of James Gandolfini without hurting herself.
Instead, Turturro had Winselt bounce on a small exercise ball to simulate sex. She also had two prop guys holding her so that she wouldn’t fall.
5. Allison Williams’ motorboat scene in Girls involved Spanx and menstrual pads
The show made headlines for having a scene where Marnie gets her butt motorboated by a man. There was a lot more work put into creating the scene than it might have seemed. “It was so elaborate,” the actress told Entertainment Weekly, “it involved Spanx that we cut away and glued down and involved menstrual pads and two of those weird thongs. I’ve had to do scenes like this twice now.”
6. The Last Tango in Paris rape scene was allegedly filmed without consent
Actors are really vulnerable when filming a scene that involves nudity, and sadly that means sometimes they are taken advantage of. That allegedly happened in Last Tango in Paris, when the director, Bernardo Bertolucci, didn’t tell Maria Schneider that Marlon Brando’s character would use butter as a lubricant in the film’s rape scene.
In a press tour, Bertolucci said he didn’t prepare Schneider “because I wanted her reaction as a girl, not as an actress. I wanted her to react humiliated.” The director’s admission caused public outcry, but this wasn’t the first time the assault was mentioned, Schneider herself talked about it.
“Marlon said to me: ‘Maria, don’t worry, it’s just a movie,’ but during the scene, even though what Marlon was doing wasn’t real, I was crying real tears,” she said according to The Huffington Post. “I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Marlon and by Bertolucci. After the scene, Marlon didn’t console me or apologize. Thankfully, there was just one take.”
7. Rooney Mara got her nipple pierced for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The actress really did get her ears, eyebrow, and nose pierced for the movie. She also had to get her nipple pierced since it would be seen in several scenes. Surprisingly, that was not the most painful piercing she got.
“It was actually not that painful,” she told Allure. “I thought, She has it in the book, and she should have it [in the movie]. Because of all the tattoos and the makeup and the piercings and the physical transformations my body has to go through, it would always feel sort of like I was in costume, even if I was naked. It just felt like a good one to get — a necessary one to get.”
8. Olivia Wilde drew smiley faces on her boobs for The Change-Up
A lot of actors try to get their on-screen partners to laugh while doing a sex scene. Olivia Wilde decided to prank Ryan Reynolds while filming their sex scene for The Change-Up. Reynolds revealed Wilde’s prank on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
So, in the scene, she’s sitting there and I take her top off and the bra off, and she has those pasties on, but she’s drawn these adorable little smiley faces on them. And I forget every line in the scene — not just from this movie but from every other movie I’ve done. At some point in the scene she takes my hands and puts them on her breasts. So, they’re there. Palms [are] a little sweaty. I don’t know what’s happening. … And I’m trying not to look at her like a 14-year-old boy that just won the lady lottery. I take my hands away and I look down at my hands and there’s two frickin’ smiley faces on them and I have no idea what to do. The scene is over now. … And I reflexively, like an idiot, just put my hands right back on her breasts. And I think I’m doing it to cover them up, but I’m realizing now that it’s a very fine line between chivalry and, you know, workplace sexual assault.
9. It took 10 days to film the Blue Is the Warmest Color sex scene
The French drama has a notably long lesbian sex scene. It turns out, it took a whopping 10 days to shoot and actress Léa Seydoux wasn’t happy about it. “Of course it was kind of humiliating sometimes, I was feeling like a prostitute,” she said according to The Huffington Post. “Of course, [director, Abdellatif Kechiche] uses that sometimes. He was using three cameras, and when you have to fake your orgasm for six hours … I can’t say that it was nothing. But for me, it is more difficult to show my feelings than my body.”
Apparently, the scene wasn’t choreographed, which is unusual. “Most people don’t even dare to ask the things that [director, Abdellatif Kechiche] did,” said acress Adèle Exarchopoulos, “and they’re more respectful –you get reassured during sex scenes, and they’re choreographed, which desexualizes the act.”
10. Anne Hathaway would accidentally ruin her body makeup on Love & Other Drugs
Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway filmed multiple sex scenes while playing lovers in Love & Other Drugs, but Hathaway was pretty uncomfortable being naked on set. She would try to cover up because of this, but that just ended up setting things back according to Entertainment Weekly.
I mean, I don’t go to the beach in a bikini for a reason. So I thought, ‘Okay, I’m going to be in control. I’m going to do everything properly, disrobe at the last minute, and in between shots get the clothes back on.’ But then I found that every time I put my robe back on, it rubbed all the body makeup off, and that added 20 minutes to filming. As with all things in life, the second you stop making it about you and you make it about everyone else, it just got, dare I say, fun.
