‘Creed II’ Trailer: Michael B. Jordan Is Up Against A Familiar Foe

The trailer for Creed II just dropped, and honestly, we weren’t prepared! In 2015, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler teamed up with actor Michael B. Jordan to reboot Sylvester Stallone’s beloved Rocky franchize. This time, the story followed Adonis Creed (Jordan) the son of Rocky Balboa’s iconic adversary Apollo Creed. Determined to become a legend like his late father, Adonis sought out an aging Rocky Balboa to be his coach and mentor, and the pair formed a father/son relationship that neither one of the men knew they needed.

Now, three years later Jordan and Stallone are back for the Creed II. Though Coogler didn’t write or direct the project this time, it looks like the franchize is still in good hands. The Fruitvale Station director is serving as executive producer while Stallone penned the script.

Directed by Steven Caple Jr, Creed II picks up with Adonis a few years later. Though he’s still swole, sweaty, and luscious, things aren’t exactly looking up for him. His personal life has progressed. He’s still with his lady love Bianca (portrayed by Tessa Thompson), he’s now a father himself, and he seems to be on good terms with Rocky and his mother (portrayed by Phylicia Rashad). However, Adonis’ career in the boxing ring doesn’t look too promising.

The official synopsis for Creed II reads,

Life has become a balancing act for Adonis Creed. Between personal obligations and training for his next big fight, he is up against the challenge of his life. Facing an opponent with ties to his family’s past only intensifies his impending battle in the ring. Rocky Balboa is there by his side through it all and, together, Rocky and Adonis will confront their shared legacy, question what’s worth fighting for, and discover that nothing’s more important than family. Creed II is about going back to basics to rediscover what made you a champion in the first place, and remembering that, no matter where you go, you can’t escape your history.

Adonis is facing the biggest challenge of his career, and his adversary has a very familiar name. His latest opponent is Viktor Drago, son of Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago. True Rocky fans will remember the name from Rocky IV. If you have no idea who Ivan Drago is then let us refresh your memory. Drago is the dude who infamously told Rocky, “I must break you.”

From the look of the beating Adonis receives in the trailer, it looks like Drago’s son is giving that same sort of energy in the boxing ring. Somehow we think if Drago were going against Killmonger instead of Adonis he wouldn’t be so arrogant, but we’ll have to wait until Creed II drops to see how it will all come together.

Sequels are always tricky. Before the original Creed dropped, folks bemoaned Coogler and his writing partner Aaron Covington for trying to breathe life into a franchize that seemed to run out of steam long ago. The writing duo proved everyone wrong. As long as you have a good story, script, and a fantastic cast, movie magic can be made.

With that being said, we have no idea if Creed II will live up to the original — but if we get to watch Michael B. Jordan shirtless, then we really don’t care.

Creed II will punch its way into theaters Nov. 21, 2018. Our bodies are ready.
