‘Criminal Minds’ Season 15: Could Shemar Moore Return for the Final Season?
Criminal Minds only has one season left and a lot of things still need to be tied up. Shemar Moore, who played Derek Morgan, was a series favorite for a long time before he left the series. So, could he actually return for the final season of Criminal Minds? Read on to learn what the evidence suggests.
Shemar Moore left the series
Derek Morgan thankfully wasn’t killed off of the series, but his character chose to leave the BAU in the end after an overwhelming set of circumstances, which included him being kidnapped and finding out his fiancé was going to have his son. He had the blessing of his close friends, which of course include Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) and Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler). There’s certainly room left for a reunion of sorts in the final season because of the way he was written off the series.
Why did Shemar Moore really leave ‘Criminal Minds’?
After 11 years on the hit CBS show, Shemar Moore made a surprising exit in 2016. Why did he leave after such a successful run with adoring fans all over the world? TVGuide spoke with Moore about his departure from the series and whether or not he might return in the future.
“I’m not leaving to go be a big star. I’m not leaving to go make a bunch of money. … I’m leaving because I just creatively want to be fueled and [am] excited to try new things and see what else I’m capable of,” Moore said. “But I’m always going to look back and salute. They did not kill me on The Young and the Restless and I went back to say hello and thank the fans. Erica Messer refused to kill Derek Morgan.”
Could Derek Morgan return for season 15?
So, could Moore return to Criminal Minds? It sounds like he isn’t ruling anything out, which gives us all a little hope in our hearts to see Derek Morgan and Penelope Garcia reunite again in the final season. It really isn’t that far-fetched of an idea. Moore’s character made an appearance twice already since his official exit, including once in the season 12 finale and again in season 13.
To hear Moore tell it, it sounds like he’s more than open to the idea. “This business is all about politics, so I’m not promising anything,” Moore said. “But from a creative place, from a passionate place, if I’m asked intermittently to come back like they did at The Young and the Restless, from my heart, the answer is yes, yes, yes, yes. But I don’t know where I’m going to be in my career and my life when that time comes. But is it possible? Yes, it’s possible.”
Although Moore has been busy with his new CBS series S.W.A.T., it sounds like he could definitely make another appearance on Criminal Minds. It would be nice to see his character return one more time for the ending of an amazing series, and fans are patiently waiting to see him again as Derek Morgan. We can only hope to hear him calling Penelope Garcia “baby girl” again before it’s all really over.
