‘Criminal Minds’: What Really Bothers Fans About the Series

In a show that’s as deeply complex as Criminal Minds, it makes sense that fans have certain opinions about what bothers them in regards to the series. The final season will be here before you know it, so it sounds like the perfect time to look at fan reactions about what they dislike or feel no longer makes sense about the show. Read on to learn more.

Fans have comments about characters and how they’ve changed

Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) is a long time favorite on the series. Some fans think her look has changed a lot over the years and not necessarily for the better.

“When Prentiss first joins the team she is polished, stylish and looks really put-together & professional (like nice tailored suits),” a Reddit user noted. “When she returns (2nd time) and takes over as unit chief, her style becomes way more casual. Like black or khaki pants, a fitted t-shirt (not button up) and an ill-fitting random blazer. It seems weird to me that she would dress more casually as the leader and ‘face’/main contact of the team.”

Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) has been around since the beginning, and some fans think he’s changed quite a lot over that time as well. “Recently, as much as I love Spencer/MGG, I feel as though thus far in season 14, it’s as if the writers have slowly taken out all the idiosyncrasies of his character,” another Reddit user said. “Sure, the character has aged, matured, changed but I feel him to be flat and his reactions off.”

Some fans believe a lot of the newer characters are just ‘filler people’

Some fans feel the series should have ended when Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) and Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore) left the show. “I feel that it should have ended as soon as Hotchner and Morgan left. I also feel like Tara, and the rest of the crew except the originals are just filler people they bring nothing to the show in my opinion,” a Reddit user noted. “I’ll never get over Hotchner leaving he was easily my favorite character.”

The cases aren’t as good for some viewers

Fans think a lot of the older episodes and seasons are better than the newer ones based on the cases they’re solving. “I think it’s the cases; there hasn’t been one that I’ve emotionally gotten really invested in and therefore haven’t really cared that much since I know they’re all going to work out,” a Reddit user wrote. “I definitely feel like the earlier seasons for me were better because the plots of the episodes were better.”

Fans want to see more character development

Many fans want to see more character development overall for the main characters especially. “My biggest problem with the show is the lack of character development,” another Reddit user said. “As you mentioned, Reid is so underdeveloped. Please, can the writers give him something happy? A girlfriend perhaps? The only reason I still watch is because I have hopes that the writers will give him a good storyline eventually.”

With only season 15 left, hopefully fans will get the best final season possible. The last season of Criminal Minds premieres on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at 9 p.m. E.S.T.
