Dakota Johnson Told Ellen DeGeneres She Didn’t Know if the Comedian Liked Her
In 2018, actor Dakota Johnson was a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and things got a little tense when the host gave Johnson a hard time for not inviting her to her birthday. Flash forward a year later in 2019 when DeGeneres began to give Johnson a hard time once again, and the Fifty Shades of Grey actor was ready.
Dakota Johnson originally didn’t invite Ellen DeGeneres to her birthday because she didn’t know if she liked her
“How was the party? I wasn’t invited,” DeGeneres began, referring to Johnson’s 30th birthday party.
“No, that’s not true, Ellen, you were invited. Last time I was on the show last year you gave me a bunch of sh*t about not inviting you,” said Johnson. “But I didn’t even know you wanted to be invited.”
“Well who wouldn’t want to be invited to a party?” asked DeGeneres.
“Well I didn’t even know you liked me,” Johnson responded with a laugh.
“Of course I like you. You knew I liked you. You’ve been on the show many times and don’t I show like?” DeGeneres asked.
“Yeah,” said Johnson. “But I did invite you and you didn’t come.”
The conversation has been used as fuel even a year later in the “mean Ellen” controversy that’s currently taking place.
We know that DeGeneres got flak for not attending Johnson’s birthday after giving her a hard time for not being invited (when she really was). But this all started with the fact that Johnson didn’t invite DeGeneres in the first place because she didn’t think the talk show host liked her.
Ellen DeGeneres isn’t Dakota Johnson’s favorite comedian
After DeGeneres’ staff told her why she didn’t attend Johnson’s party (she was out of town), the host asked Johnson about the entertainment at her celebration. Comedian Tig Notaro performed.
“It was a surprise,” said Johnson, adding that Notaro is her “favorite comedian.”
DeGeneres put on a sad face and Johnson responded: “Other than you!”
The actor got up and left to play up the tension, only to return with an “I’m sorry.”
“I was just talking to my favorite actress the other day, Jen Anniston,” DeGeneres quipped back.
“She’s my favorite actress, too,” Johnson agreed.
After a little more awkward birthday talk, Johnson proclaimed, “Gosh, this isn’t going well.”
But when they settled into talking about the movie Johnson came on to promote, The Peanut Butter Falcon, Johnson visibly eased.
‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ viewers respond to the awkward interview
The comments under the clip on YouTube range from a year old to fresh from this month. Mostly, viewers comment on the tension.
“This interview is so passive aggressive,” wrote one YouTube user 7 months ago.
“This interview is aging WONDERFULLY,” commented another person 3 months ago.
One person zeroed in on the comment Johnson made about not knowing if DeGeneres liked her.
“She said ‘I didn’t even know you liked me’ this makes sense now knowing Ellen probably didn’t even acknowledge her off stage,” the YouTube user mused. The comment received 7,000 likes.
