‘Dance Moms’: Abby Lee Miller Opens Up About Being Misdiagnosed Before Her Spinal Surgery

Abby Lee Miller is known for being a perfectionist. She is known for always getting what she wants and never taking “no” for an answer. What she is not known for is being vulnerable. But yesterday, the Dance Moms star opened up about what’s she’s been going through with her cancer battle.

What procedures has Lee Miller had?

Last April, Lee Miller underwent emergency surgery. Initially, doctors believed that she had a spinal infection, but eventually determined that she was actually suffering from Burkitt Lymphoma.

In an emotional post on Instagram, Lee Miller went into detail about her fight against cancer.

“One year ago today ~ I underwent emergency surgery for an infection in my spine,” she wrote under a picture of her surgery scar. “This mass/tumor choking my spinal cord turned out to be Burkitt Lymphoma. I endured ten rounds of chemotherapy (each lasting 6 days with 4/ 24hr bags pumping poison into my body ending with a spinal tap in 3 spots, plus another shot of Chemo into my tailbone area up the spinal cord around my brain cavity) Ten times! Another spine surgery was needed & I have one more still to go.”

Another spine surgery was needed & I have one more still to go. I struggled thru months of physical therapy to learn to sit up again, to crawl and maybe with a miracle someday I’ll walk. Why didn’t the ER Doctors on duty do their jobs? I came in twice with the same symptoms? Why didn’t somebody listen to me, the patient? I finally found the right team that’s why I lived to tell my story, I have a lot to say! Thank you to all wonderful top notch professionals who continue to help me heal. For those who missed it, misdiagnosed me, and the so called Federal “Doctor” who took me off medication cold turkey and the other ER “Doctor Hollywood” who told me to go home and take it easy for 10 days – STOP practicing! Please 🙏🏻

Even after the surgery, Lee Miller is still working to find a sense of normalcy again.

“I struggled thru months of physical therapy to learn to sit up again, to crawl and maybe with a miracle someday I’ll walk.”

Why was Lee Miller misdiagnosed?

Before finally discovering the cancer, Miller says that she was misdiagnosed and sent home without help.

“Why didn’t the ER Doctors on duty do their jobs?” she wrote. “I came in twice with the same symptoms? Why didn’t somebody listen to me, the patient? I finally found the right team that’s why I lived to tell my story, I have a lot to say! Thank you to all wonderful top-notch professionals who continue to help me heal. Please.”

How will Lee Miller’s condition affect Dance Moms?

Despite being wheelchair-bound, Lee Miller will still continue on as a part of Dance Moms.

In the trailer for the new season, she opens up about how her life was turned upside down by her diagnoses.

“In an instant, your life changes completely,” she said. “I was ready to go back to work and start my life over and now I can’t even walk.”

Though she may not be able to dance herself anymore, she’s still ready to teach her kids again.

“I need to get back to teaching and I need to get back to screaming at children,” she said. “I need to get back to my roots. I’m going to take these kids right back to the turf.”
