‘Dancing With the Stars’: MAGA Supporters Might Be Voting for Sean Spicer Even Though He Can’t Dance

There’s something so watchable about Dancing With the Stars even when the contestants are awful. Some fans find it even more entertaining when the show features terrible dancers — which makes some people wonder if the whole thing is rigged to allow some questionable talent to advance no matter what. And in some cases, the alleged conspiracy runs even deeper than that.

Former White House press secretary for the Trump administration Sean Spicer is the subject of the latest criticism. With his awkward moves that barely qualify as dancing, fans are really starting to wonder if MAGA supporters are voting Spicer through even though he’s objectively untalented. Could this be true?

‘DWTS’ fans were anxious to see Sean Spicer perform

Even before Spicer took the stage in a puffy, neon yellow shirt that would have made Jerry Seinfeld proud, DWTS viewers were scratching their heads over the decision to include the 48-year-old former press secretary as a contestant. It’s true that the show has been lenient with the word “star” in the past, including everyone from obscure actors to athletes in the show. But this choice seemed particularly troubling.

Critics immediately began voicing concerns over the move, claiming the inclusion “normalized” Spicer and his actions in the White House. They said he had lied to the American people on multiple occasions and even though he resigned his post at the White House, he shouldn’t be brought back into the mainstream.

Meanwhile, DWTS producers undoubtedly saw the controversy for what it was: an opportunity for increased exposure and conversation, plus the potential for new viewers who did want to see Sean Spicer shake his booty on national television. In 2018, the show reported its lowest ratings in history for a fall finale. Spicer’s inclusion is likely an attempt to remedy that.

Sean Spicer is not a naturally good dancer

Though DWTS is a show about watching regular people dance, most contestants have at least some level of natural talent. Sean Spicer? Not so much. His dancing partner Lindsay Arnold described his dancing aptitude as “pre-pre-school level” and confirmed he “wasn’t a natural at it.” Fans agreed after watching his first performance.

When Spicer and Arnold salsa danced to “Spice Up Your Life,” the internet blew up with reactions, most of them hilarious. But one stood out. Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabe tweeted what many conservatives were probably thinking when he said, “Wanna create an emotional meltdown in Hollyweird? Vote for @seanspicer to win ‘Dancing With the Stars’ tonight and every night he’s on.”

It’s been long believed that Hollywood is seen as super liberal and anti-Republican. Sean Spicer represented the breaking down of these walls, even if he was an awful dancer.

What does Sean Spicer think of the support?

On some level, Spicer must know that he’s not a great dancer, but he always looks like he’s having fun learning new moves. As for the conservative fans voting him through, Spicer simply said when he signed on that he hoped DWTS would be a “politics-free zone.” However, if he’s being judged solely on his dancing, then there’s no way he’d still be competing.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time a conservative has competed on the show. Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson appeared on the show, along with the Republican Texas governor Rick Perry. However, Spicer is seen as the most prominent and the one with the closest ties to Donald Trump.

We’ll see how much longer Sean Spicer lasts on the show — and we can’t wait to see what dance moves (and wacky outfits) he comes up with next.

Dancing With the Stars airs on ABC Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET.
