There was some fan backlash to season 27. That’s because a popular celebrity won despite him not being the best dancer.

Now that the show is back it has been teased that the voting system has changed. Host Tom Bergeron teased this to Entertainment Tonight saying judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli, and Carrie Ann Inaba will have a “little extra oomph” this season.

There will also be live voting this season. “We wanted to do something a little different this year,” executive producer Andrew Llinares said according to Us Weekly. “After 27 seasons it’s tough. We want to keep the show fresh for you guys. We just thought it would be kind of fun to to hold off on revealing the partners to the audience until the premiere. … I think it’s a fun little twist.”

There is another reason there are multiple changes this season. “We’ve been off air for a year so we want to make this season really, really special and make it bigger, more exciting and more fun than it’s ever been,” explained Llinares.

The producer added, “One thing we are going to do is introduce live voting on the program this season, which is something we haven’t done before. You’ll see the result at the end of that show based upon what happened that night.”

Judges can now save a star

The big twist to this new season has been revealed. Judges usually score the celebrity performances. Now they get another big responsibility this season.

Judges can now save the team they want to continue in the competition, according to Us Weekly. The voting this season also will take into account fans live voting and adding that with the judges’ scores.

We will now get to see who will be their favorite through this strategy. It also might push through some of the best teams that have an off week, or doesn’t have as much support from fans.

Fans seem to be split about the judges being able to save

It’s risky to give more power to the judges because it could go against the fans. Fans seem to be split about this change.

Some are happy about the news. One fan tweeted, “the judges being able to save one of the bottom two is v interesting and should stop good people from getting eliminated, I like it #DWTS.”

A fan who is against the change tweeted, “No more dwts for me the voting this year is horrible. I have never seen a score as low as 4 . Again the judges are doing a number on the African American contestants #DWTS.”

We will have to wait and see who the judges will save this season, and if fans will be happy about it.
