‘Days of Our Lives’ Renewed! When Can Fans Expect Season 56?
Days of Our Lives fans got a huge scare when reports surfaced that the cast and crew were taking an indefinite hiatus. This month, news broke that the show’s production company had released all of the actors and that NBC was waiting to see if they wanted to renew the iconic soap opera for a 56th season. Turns out, the network fully expects to bring the show back for at least one more season.
Inside the rumored cancellation
A few weeks ago, reports surfaced that all of the cast and crew of Days of Our Lives had been released from their contracts.
This was reportedly done so that they could all pursue other projects while the fate of the series was being decided. NBC is expected to announce a renewal (or cancellation) at the beginning of next year.
The network, unfortunately, has not commented on the reports, which sent fans into a frenzy on social media. Needless to say, viewers did not react well to the idea that their favorite show was getting canceled.
Days of Our Lives is one of four soap operas that remain on the major networks. The other three shows include The Bold and The Beautiful, The Young and The Restless, and General Hospital – all of which have an extensive history.
Fans react to the devastating news
After hearing about a potential cancellation, fans expressed their outrage on social media. With 55 seasons under its belt, there are many viewers who have been following the series their entire lives – which is why they were so upset.
“WHAT?!?!?!? This must be a joke! Please say it isn’t true. So many good actors/stories. This breaks my heart,” one fan shared.
Other Days of Our Lives fans pointed out that the series has a massive following around the world and should be kept on air with the other daily soap operas.
While NBC has not chimed in on the matter, the actors were likely released from their contracts so that they can sign new ones next year. This allows the studio to offer the actors a smaller salary, which will help with production costs.
This is not good news for the cast of the series, but it does increase the chances that the show will get renewed.
‘Days of Our Lives’ likely to get renewed
While it is true that the cast and crew of Days of Our Lives are taking a break, the series is not getting canceled. As a source explained to People, production takes place months ahead of each episode and the series is well ahead of schedule.
So the cast and crew do not need to shoot any more scenes until they get closer to an official renewal. NBC is fully expected to pick up the show for another season, so it is only a matter of time before they all get back to work.
“The show shoots months and months in advance and they’ve gotten so far ahead that the cast was prepared ages ago for the fact that they would all be put on hiatus until closer to pick-up (aka renewal) time, for scheduling reasons,” the insider dished.
The source added that nobody on the set of Days of Our Lives is concerned about getting canceled. In fact, producers are already in talks about renewing the series, which is a good sign that things are underway.
Days of Our Lives has been in production for an incredible 55 seasons, dating back to 1965. Some notable stars of the series include Suzanne Rogers, John Aniston, Eileen Davidson, Susan Seaforth Hayes, Deidre Hall, Chrishell Hartley, and Alison Sweeney.
What can fans expect in season 56 of ‘Days of Our Lives’?
Producers have not revealed much about season 56 of Days of Our Lives, but things will likely pick up where season 55 leaves off.
This season, the show took a surprise approach and featured a long time jump with the characters. The goal was to reveal more and more of what happened during the year-long gap as the season unfolds.
There is no telling if the tactic will pay off or not. But with season 56 pretty much a given at this point, the series will have at least another year to make fans happy.
Once the show gets renewed, production is expected to start sometime in March. There is no telling what will happen to the series beyond season 56, but we have a hard time believing NBC will ever cancel it.
New episodes of Days of Our Lives air weekdays on NBC.
