DCEU Leak: A Film With Lex Luthor as President Is on Warner Bros.’ Radar
Joker has premiered to widespread success across all pivotal indicators — critical reception, audience reviews, and box office sales. Joaquin Phoenix’s tour de force performance as the Clown Prince of Crime in a unique departure from comic book lore has already incited Oscar buzz. And, despite facing backlash for what many would consider a lack of sensitivity to our current times, the film has emerged largely triumphant.
Given Joker’s success, it should come as no surprise that Warner Bros. is looking to do another villain-themed film with a twist. Since the DCEU isn’t too concerned with its timeline, or the nature of what it means to create an interconnected universe (with the same actors always playing the same character), creating another film of this kin would not be out of line with the studio’s tendencies. And, Lex Luthor may be the next big Batman baddie to come to the silver screen in a form other than Jesse Eisenberg.
According to Mikey Sutton — a credible comic book insider with a history of leaking accurate MCU and DCEU news — Warner Bros. is toying with the idea of a Lex Luthor-inspired film.
The studio may put Super-Man on hold for a while, and continue in the same direction that has already proved worthwhile — hoping to strike gold in the same mine twice.
The DCEU may feature Lex Luthor as President in an R-rated political drama
Mikey Sutton took to his invite-only facebook page, “Geekosity: All Things Pop Culture” to share the following information:
Warner Bros. is considering a Lex Luthor film. No Man of Steel; he’s pure fiction in this alternate universe. To WB, this has the potential of being a modern-day Citizen Kane. You see Luthor grow up from being an awkward intellectual kid to corrupt wealthy businessman to president of the United States. Slap on an R rating and leave the comic books behind but perhaps put a twist on the myth such as making Lois Lane his First Lady, but also the reporter who brings him down.Geekosity: All Things Pop Culture
Mikey Sutton goes on to explain that, based on the individuals involved in green-lighting such productions, Warner Bros. would love to go forward with this movie and, following Joker’s success, is feeling more confident about the film than they were initially.
Joker may just be the start of several unique, villain-oriented origin tales coming from the DC Universe. And, if they continue to prove successful, the DCEU may, at last, be able to give the MCU a run for its money.
The DCEU is able to do one thing that Disney can’t get away with as easily: push out adult-themed, R-rated dramas with supers and villains at the core, abandoning the family-friendly caped crusader depictions inherent to comic book to screen adaptations.
Considering that this movie is still no more than an idea, casting remains completely up in the air; however, Sutton comments that the likes of Bryan Cranston would fit in the role, and bring in the desired crowd. Sutton argues that if Warner Bros. can attract top-drawer talent for the project, they will definitely move forward, as such a film would fall in the Oscar-bait realm — which is right where Joker will likely find itself.
