‘Deadpool 3’: Director David Leitch Has ‘Crazy Ideas’ For a Third Movie, But It Might Not Happen with Marvel
Is Deadpool 3 coming soon to a theater near you? The fans certainly hope so!
The world’s most irreverent and off-color superhero was part of the gigantic acquisition deal between 20th Century Fox and Disney that just went down. Suddenly, the same folks who brought you benign musicals about singing lions own the R-rated antihero Deadpool. Now what are they going to do with him?
Rumor has it that Ryan Reynolds will take on the role in several Marvel cameos, including a Spider-Man film and eventually the next Avengers movies, which is exciting enough news on its own. But what about Deadpool 3? Here’s what the director had to say about the idea.
‘Deadpool’ is unlike most superhero movies
Thanks to their massive money-making abilities, superhero movies are more popular than ever right now. Avengers: Endgame pulled in $1.2 billon worldwide in the opening weekend alone. Yes, some critics warn that people will get sick of action hero movies eventually. But that day hasn’t come yet.
But Deadpool is a whole different kind of superhero. The Merc with the Mouth, as he’s known, is contentious and difficult to like. But clearly, fans do like him, because the original movie and the sequel did exceptionally well at the box office.
The director of ‘Deadpool 2’ is on board for the next movie
Based on the success of previous films, most fans assumed that Deadpool would become a ‘threequel’ eventually, though that future remains uncertain right now. However, if Disney does choose to give Deadpool another solo film, then Deadpool 2 director David Leitch is on board for it.
As Leith said, “In everybody’s world, everybody wants to make it. So, if I was ever approached to make Deadpool 3, my answer would be, ‘Hell yes,’ but I think there’s a lot of things going on in the shake up with Fox and Disney and where that whole Marvel world after Endgame is gonna be. When the dust settles, let’s hope that Deadpool lives. That’s kind of ironic, right?”
Leitch is obviously hoping he will be approached. As he said in an interview, “I have a lot of ideas [for the third movie] but I’m keeping them close to my vest.”
“So, if they ever come and I’m grateful enough for them to call, I can share all my crazy ideas.”
It’s unclear how Marvel will introduce Deadpool into the family
Being a unique superhero has its benefits. But it does make things trickier in the wake of the merger. The main question on everyone’s mind is how the character of Deadpool will be introduced and what role he’ll play in the future of the MCU.
At this point, no concrete details are confirmed for Deadpool’s role in future Avengers movies or for greenlighting the project of a third installment solo film. But considering the potential film revenue, the popularity of Deadpool, and the director’s excitement over making another movie, there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing Ryan Reynolds reprise his iconic role in the near future.
