Deadpool’s MCU Debut Could Build on ‘Deadpool 2’ in 1 Exciting Way
Seven years after Ryan Reynolds’ appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, 2016’s Deadpool proved the character’s box office viability. The Merc with the Mouth headlined two solo hits at Fox before Disney acquired the studio. And now a new report indicates Reynolds’ Marvel Studios debut could neatly build off of the most recent Deadpool movie.
Ryan Reynolds wants Deadpool in the MCU as soon as possible
Soon after Disney’s acquisition of Fox became official, fans were eager for news about how the studio’s Marvel superheroes would join the MCU. Fox had previously held movie rights for countless Fantastic Four and X-Men characters, including Deadpool. But this new deal meant these characters could join the Avengers at last.
Given Reynolds’ close ties to Deadpool, fans assume he’s on lock to reprise the role in the MCU. The actor himself has playfully teased why fans haven’t heard updates about his MCU debut. But Marvel Studios has not made an official announcement in any regard. Still, rumor has it Reynolds and Marvel are struggling to decide how to move forward.
Fans are worried the character will lose his R-rated edge under Disney
The Disney-owned MCU has always leaned more toward the family-friendly side of things. While not explicitly aimed at children, the movies are careful to sanitize the source material enough to ensure a PG-13 rating. But Deadpool’s appeal lies at the very opposite end of things.
The character’s most distinctive qualities — at least on the big screen — have been his foul mouth and proclivity for over-the-top violence. Both Fox Deadpool movies rely on both to set the hero apart from his suited-up counterparts. In many respects, his solo adventures serve as parodies of traditional comic book entries.
Reynolds serves as a producer on the Deadpool movies and a writer on the sequel. According to reports, he wants to go all-in on the character’s R-rated sensibility. However, rumors indicate Marvel Studios is far more hesitant to stir such an extreme presence into the greater MCU.
But his MCU debut could build directly off of his 2018 sequel
For now, fans can only speculate how Reynolds and Marvel will come to an agreement. But a new report over at We Got This Covered might offer some indication about how Deadpool’s MCU debut can build on his most recent appearance. In 2018’s Deadpool 2, the character sacrificed himself to save the life of a young mutant (Julian Dennison).
Of course, Deadpool only dies briefly, but his death could still lead to a major change. WGTC claims Deadpool will come face to face with Lady Death, the literal manifestation of death in Marvel Comics. Apparently, Lady Death will have an attraction for Deadpool as in the comics. Because of this, the character will boast some new powers when he comes back to life.
Deadpool 2 opens with the revelation that the hero will pay the ultimate price. So leveraging that storyline for Reynolds’ MCU debut could be a smart way to push the character forward. After all, the inevitable Deadpool 3 is bound to mark a fresh start for the hero. It might as well take advantage of the fact that Deadpool is literally getting a new life in a brand-new universe.
