‘Dear Evan Hansen’: Where Can You Watch the Movie Trailer for the Ben Platt Broadway Musical?
Dear Evan Hansen premiered on Broadway in 2016 with Hamilton-level hype. The show was written by Steven Levenson and had music created by Benji Pasek and Justin Paul, who went on to be behind beloved songs in La La Land and The Greatest Showman. Dear Evan Hansen served as a launching pad for Ben Platt, who before the musical, was seen in Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2. Now years after playing Evan Hansen on Broadway, Platt returned to perform the same role in the movie. The Dear Evan Hansen trailer was just released — here’s where you can watch it.
Ben Platt led ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ in 2016 when the musical debuted
Dear Evan Hansen first played for audiences in Washington, DC in 2015, then went Off-Broadway in March 2016 at the Second Stage Theater. It opened on Broadway in November 2016 at the Music Box Theater. Platt won the Tony Award for Lead Actor in a Musical in 2017 for his work in the role.
After Platt left the show in 2017, many other actors filled the Evan Hansen spot. Noah Galvin, Taylor Trensch, Andrew Barth Feldman, and Jordan Fisher all played the titular role after Platt.

Universal Pictures dropped the first trailer for the Broadway musical-turned major motion picture on May 18. And funnily enough, movies run in Platt’s family. The Broadway star is reprising his role of Evan Hansen, with his dad, Marc Platt, co-producing the film. The older Platt was a producer in the following movies: Legally Blonde, La La Land, Aladdin (2019), among many others.
Like the musical, Dear Evan Hansen follows the story of a lonely high school boy. One kid, Connor Murphy, writes on Evan’s arm cast and takes a letter from Evan that he wrote for his therapist. Connor subsequently dies by suicide, and his parents mistakenly believe that Evan was his secret friend.
Dear Evan Hansen the movie is slated to be released on September 24, 2021. The film also stars Julianne Moore, Kaitlyn Dever, Amy Adams, Danny Pino, Colton Ryan, Amandla Stenberg, and Nik Dodani.
Ben Platt returned to play the role he originated after television work
In between Platt’s work on the Broadway musical and the movie for Dear Evan Hansen, he pursued other projects. Platt appeared in a 2017 episode of Will & Grace, playing the character Blake in the episode “Who’s Your Daddy.” Platt also had appearances on Songland and The Simpsons.
Then, Platt starred in two seasons of Ryan Murphy’s Netflix show, The Politician. In it, Platt played scarily ambitious teen Payton Hobart, who has goals to end up in the White House one day and is unafraid to knock down anyone in his way.
Platt also used his vocal talents to create his own album. Sing to Me Instead came out in March 2019 under the Atlantic record label. Platt also sang for the Dear Evan Hansen original cast recording album as well as The Politician album.
