Demi Lovato and Other Celebrities Who Stayed Friends With Their Exes
Celebrity couples: they’re just like us, right? Some of them are even more mature as they navigate befriending their exes and remaining in contact with people they once dated. These celebrity exes demonstrated how to take the high road and remain friends with an ex — potentially while working with them, dating new people, and helping one another through rough times.
Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake
- Started dating: 2004
- Split: 2007
While Cameron Diaz admits her ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, is “freaking weird,” there doesn’t seem to be any bad blood between the two comedic actors. They even worked together on the 2011 comedy Bad Teacher, nearly four years after splitting up.
“Justin and I have always had a good laugh together…and there really was no one else who was more perfect for this part,” she told Us Weekly. Diaz praised Timberlake’s skills outside of the beyond the movie as well, calling him a “genius comedian,” and “the best person for the job.” At the time, Timberlake was dating his soon-to-be wife Jessica Biel. Turns out, he called Diaz before he asked Biel out to get the OK.
Biel didn’t jump at his invitation right away. “I had to be pretty persistent in order to get her to say yes,” he revealed in 2012 after they married.
Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow
- Married: 2003
- Separated: 2013
- Divorced: 2014
Actress Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin have managed to stay good friends and co-parents even after their infamous “conscious uncoupling.” The two separated in 2013 then announced their split in a Goop newsletter while on a family vacation in the Bahamas.
Paltrow explained the paradigm shift in their relationship post-divorce and how they remain support systems for one another and their children; Apple, 14, and Moses, 12. “It’s also almost about having to press the ‘override’ button whenever you feel angry or jealous or whatever, broken-hearted,” she said in 2016. “You have to press the button—I’m going back to the baseline of ‘I love this person, he’s the father of my children, he’s a wonderful man. I’m just going to put my s–t aside for right now.'”
Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama
- Started dating: 2010
- Split: 2016
Fans, family members, and friends all expressed their love and concern for Demi Lovato following her recent reported heroin overdose. One friend, in particular, her ex-boyfriend and old love Wilmer Valderrama, has spent significant time at Lovato’s bedside to show his support. Lovato revealed in her YouTube documentary, Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated, that she’s “never loved anybody like I loved Wilmer … and like I still love him.” The documentary was shot a year after they split, so many were curious to know how their relationship continued post-breakup.
The two split after six years together and shared matching statements on their respective accounts. “This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as friends. We will always be supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years.”
Various news outlets released information that proved Lovato and Valderrama were upholding their promise to remain supportive of one another. “Lovato is resting and getting better, while her whole family and Valderrama are there to support her through her recovery,” a source told E! News, while TMZ claimed Valderrama sat at Lovato’s bedside for “about 5 hours” at a time.
Courteney Cox and David Arquette
- Married: 1999
- Separated: 2010
- Divorced: 2013
Courteney Cox married David Arquette in June of 1999, halfway through her run on Friends and his Scream career. Cox and Arquette had one daughter, Coco Riley, together in 2004 and named close friend and former costar Jennifer Aniston her godmother. The family kept their personal life relatively private. They also developed a working relationship together as they ran Coquette Productions, their joint TV and film production company they started in 2003.
Speculation of their separation first came out in 2010. The two kept a close business relationship, however, they finalized their divorce in 2013. “[David is] my favorite person in the world. No matter what happens in our future, he’s my very best friend,” Cox told People Magazine shortly after their split.
And they’ve certainly remained close. While both began dating other people (Cox with Johnny McDaid and Arquette with Christina McLarty, who he married in 2015) they have stayed committed to their family.
