Demi Lovato Drops New Song ‘Still Have Me’ Following Breakup: ‘Music Is Always There For Me’
After more than a year without releasing music, singer Demi Lovato returned in 2020 with plenty of new songs for her Lovatics. After a string of collaborations, including “OK Not to Be OK” with Marshmello, she’s dropped a fresh ballad in the wake of a significant breakup. Here’s a look at the song and what it means for her upcoming album.
Demi Lovato split from fiance Max Ehrich in September 2020
Lovato began dating actor Max Ehrich in March 2020, just as the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic led to shelter-in-place orders. Ehrich came to stay with her, and the two kept their relationship relatively quiet for a couple of months, amid mounting suspicions. They confirmed they were dating in May 2020.
From there, the relationship heated up. The couple shared frequent photos of one another on social media, and Lovato spoke about their “whirlwind romance.” On July 23, 2020, Ehrich proposed, and Lovato accepted. However, in September 2020, they quietly separated, with E! News writing that Lovato “doesn’t trust him and thinks he’s sketchy.”
Throughout their relationship, she worked on her seventh album
When she began dating Ehrich, Lovato was already hard at work on her seventh album. She had released “I Love Me,” thought to be the first single off of it, and fans were eager for more. During their relationship, she dropped multiple collaborations. However, these may not reflect what’s to come.
“We kinda had a moment, Scooter [Braun, Lovato’s manager] and I, where he was like, ‘You know what? I think we need to take a different route and a different approach with the album, where we show your voice off more. We need to put more ballads in there,'” said Lovato on the Emo Nite Ride or Cry podcast in May 2020.
After they broke up, Lovato teased a new song
While Ehrich has used his Instagram Stories to discuss their split, Lovato has remained relatively quiet on the subject matter, sharing day-to-day videos of her spending time with friends and meditating. However, it would appear that she was also hard at work on a new song.
Late on September 29, 2020, Lovato shared a simple tweet. “Music is always there for me…song in the am.” Her fans immediately began to share their excitement, writing supportive messages to the singer. “I love how your songs are so relatable and make me feel better,” wrote one on Twitter.
Is ‘Still Have Me’ about the breakup?
Lovato came through on her promise. On September 30, she shared “Still Have Me” on her social media channels. “These lyrics and melody are a blessing Demi,” wrote one fan on Twitter. “Like always, you hit the right spot in our hearts. Thank you for sharing this. Thank you for opening your heart with us. We love you so much.”
“Still Have Me” is a sweeping piano ballad, with Lovato’s powerful vocals backed by a choir. The surprise drop on a profoundly personal track is reminiscent of the singer’s first song of 2020, “Anyone,” which she debuted at the Grammys. However, this tune was leaked long before the breakup, meaning she didn’t write it about Ehrich.
