Demi Lovato Pokes Fun at Her Short-Lived Engagement To Max Ehrich at the 2020 People’s Choice Awards
While kicking off the annual People’s Choice Awards on November 15, the pop singer gave a hilarious opening monologue about all of the things she went through this year and didn’t hesitate to mention her short-lived engagement to her now ex-fiancé.
Demi Lovato joked that COVID-19 is to blame for her whirlwind engagement
2020 was a rollercoaster year for Lovato, and she wasn’t afraid to speak on her experiences while hosting E! People’s Choice Awards over the weekend.
During her opening monologue, the “Sorry Not Sorry” hitmaker touched up all of the things she went through during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which included calling off her two-month-long engagement to Max Ehrich.
“I am so excited to be here tonight because honestly this year has been the longest three years of my life,” Lovato said. “Don’t get me wrong, it started out amazing. I performed at the Grammys and sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl. But then COVID hit, and everything shut down.”
The singer then jokingly recall all of the things that kept her busy over the next few months.
“So, I did what everyone else did: I went into lockdown mode. And got engaged,” she joked. “I got into painting, photography, meditation, tested the limits of Postmates Unlimited. Also, I didn’t know this could happen, but I reached the end of Instagram four times. I binged seven seasons of Pretty Little Liars, got unengaged, then went looking for aliens in the desert. So basically the same as everyone else!”
Lovato ended her monologue on a more serious note, saying, “During all of these challenging times, we found ways to stay connected and get each other through it. That’s what tonight is all about, to celebrate the people, music, shows, and films that helped us get through 2020. And tonight it’s all about the people.”
This is the first time Demi Lovato has talked about her breakup from Ehrich publicly
For those of you who don’t know, Lovato and Ehrich called it quits in September 2020, just two months after the actor proposed to the pop singer on a beach.
After news broke that the couple had separated, insiders revealed that distance played a significant part in the pair ending their relationship.
“Demi and Max were basically together 24/7 for months,” a source told People. “They lived in a bubble with zero stress, and everything was just fun. Now they are both working and are on separate coasts.”
However, another source later told E! News that Lovato began to have second thoughts about Ehrich, which prompted her to call off their engagement.
“There has been a lot of tension and Demi left him to get a clear head. She didn’t know who Max truly was and didn’t think he had good intentions,” the insider shared. “There were many red flags she was ignoring and trying to turn a blind eye to.”
As more information surrounding their breakup came to light, Ehrich made a public show of it by speaking about his relationship with Lovato on social media.
Lovato, on the other hand, didn’t do the same and has instead given interviews about her music and other things going on in her life — including a possible extraterrestrial sighting.
The People’s Choice Awards marks the first time she’s publicly mentioned her breakup from Ehrich. Though she didn’t dive into details while speaking about their previous engagement, Lovato definitely proved that she’s moved on from her ex and is doing great now that she’s a single woman again!
