Derek Hough Finds Humor in a Recent Health Scare

Usually having a serious health scare is no laughing matter. But dancer Derek Hough managed to find the humor in something that could have been extremely serious.

Hough shared to Instagram that extreme pain jarred him from his sleep. “Woke up at 3am with a severe and a sharp pain in my abdomen,” he shared. “Knew something wasn’t right. Turned out it was appendicitis and had surgery to remove my appendix straight away.”

Thankfully, Hough managed to get to the hospital and his appendicitis was correctly diagnosed and treated. But after surgery and under some pretty heavy sedation, Hough managed to not only get up out of bed. He decided it would be fun to dance for his girlfriend, Hayley Erbert. His sense of humor is clearly strong, but so is his pain threshold too.

He decided to dance immediately after surgery

Only a professional athlete and dancer like Hough would decide that dancing was a good (and funny) idea after undergoing surgery. “This is me immediately after, still a little(a lot) medicated, giving  @hayley.erbert a (sexy) little dance,” Hough continued with his post. “Me: Is this doing it for you babe? Hayley: So hot. Thank you for lying to me babe ;)”

Hough is moving his legs in front of the camera, showing off his compression stockings needed post-surgery. He chose a funny, drunken-sounding song to accompany his valiant efforts. Hough is also rocking a hospital gown looking better than pretty much anyone in it too. He gives the camera a sexy look. Then he appears to get busted by (probably) a nurse or a doctor. He laughs and turns, looking rather lucid after undergoing surgery.

Hough looks like he’s handling the pain pretty well. According to Kaiser Permanente, post-op pain and exhaustion can persist for several days. “After your surgery, it is normal to feel weak and tired for several days after you return home. Your belly may be swollen and may be painful. If you had laparoscopic surgery, you may have pain in your shoulder for about 24 hours.”

But then again, it’s Derek Hough

While most people would be in bed (crying), Hough has proved to be a pretty tough guy in the past. This is the same guy who chills with huge sharks and climbs mountains. So he’s probably not going to let surgery stand in his way of having fun.

He recently shared with Showbiz Cheat Sheet about a shark dive. “I’m going diving with great white sharks in the Galápagos Islands in about three weeks,” he said before the dive occurred. “I’ve actually dove with sharks before,” he says. “I’ve scuba dived with bigger sharks.” In fact, Hough says, “I’ve actually free-dived with tiger sharks.”

Hough revealed that he likes to face his fears. “I think a lot of fear is based in the unknown and the uncertainty of something. I think once you learn about something and understand it, that fear dissipates,” he said. “But also, having a little bit of fear is a great feeling because when you are able to overcome that or do something in spite of fear, its a really amazing feeling to have.”
