Derick Dillard, Jill Duggar’s Husband, Just Said He’d Allow His Kids to Attend Public School

From their sheltered home life to their bizarre courting rituals, we’ve all heard one thing or another about the Duggar family. And while Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar originally shared their lives raising 19 children on TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting, it’s now their older kids who are taking the celebrity role and carrying the torch with Counting On. There is one Duggar who’s no longer featured on the show, however — and that’s Jill. After her husband, Derick Dillard, took to Twitter to share transphobic and homophobic tweets, TLC cut ties with the family.

Jill and Derick still have tons of followers on social media, however. And recently, the couple posted about Derick going back to school for law. It was on his Instagram post that Derick also shared whether or not he’d allow his kids to go to public school, too.

Not only did Michelle Duggar cook, clean, and care for 19 children as they grew up, but she also homeschooled them. And it seems her older kids who have children of their own are following in her footsteps. The Duggars were homeschooled using ATI, or Advanced Training Institute, which is a program steeped in controversy. In Touch Weekly explains the program is a “Biblically-based home education program for families who desire to raise up sons and daughters who are ‘mighty in Spirit’ and able to impact the world for Jesus Christ,” according to its website. The site also notes that through Christ, children can be taught “linguistics, law, history, science, and medicine.”

It’s assumed that Jill uses these same teachings for her sons, Israel and Samuel. And she’s even posted about “car-schooling” — teaching her kids to read while in the car — which Reddit users took particular issue with.

Derick Dillard noted on Instagram he went through 19 years of public school

Jill may have been homeschooled, but Derick has noted in the past that he was not — and he also reminded everyone again on Instagram that he went through the public schooling system. “First day of school #21 is in the books! (19 years in public school & 2 in seminary),” he captioned his Instagram post. He’s currently going for another year at law school, and Jill also posted about it on her own Instagram.

The fact that Jill was homeschooled and Derick wasn’t leaves fans with questions, especially since Derick claims Jill actually attended college, too. Derick told an agitated fan that he bet Jill had more college credits than the person he was commenting back to. The star claims Jill has college credits from Boyce College located in Louisville, Kentucky. Considering it’s a Christian college, this may be the case — and Derick also never mentioned that Jill had an actual degree, making his comment likely to be true.

While Derick is ultra-supportive of Jill homeschooling the boys, it turns out he’s also open to his kids going to public school. On the Instagram photo celebrating his return to schooling, a follower asked, “Would you ever allow any of your kids to attend public schools?” To that Derick simply responded with, “yes.”

It turns out Jill may be open to the idea, too. In Touch Weekly notes a follower asked her on an Instagram photo awhile back, “[I]f your boys request to go to public school, will you let them?” And to that, she replied, “[M]aybe. Probably will at some point for college.”

We’ll have to wait and see what Jill and Derick decide is best for their kids as they get older, as Israel is just 4 and Samuel is 2. But if they do decide to enroll their kids in a public school or encourage them to go to a public college, we shouldn’t be too surprised!
