Details You May Have Missed In the ‘AHS’ Season 9 Trailer

FX Network has just released a series of teaser trailers for American Horror Story Season 9, otherwise known as AHS: 1984. Pull out your Aqua Net and throw on your high-waisted jeans because ‘80s horror is back in style!

Each teaser starts out the same way: a bunch of teenagers frolicking around at a summer camp before their fun comes to a crashing halt when a masked killer attacks. Nothing more to see here, right? Well, the AHS trailers are famous for containing tiny details that hint at things to come in the upcoming season.

So, sit back, relax, and put on your aviators. We’re going to go over the tiny details you might have missed in the American Horror Story Season 9 teaser trailers.

The color red

Bright, vibrant, and glowing, the color red has a starring role in each of the teaser trailers so far. Whether it’s a glimpse of a pair of shorts or a closeup of a beer can, the trailer editors really seem to want viewers to notice this pop of color.

Teenage girls prance around in red bikinis and red high-waisted shorts while teenage boys flaunt red tank tops and red button-ups. Even the back of the camp’s sign spells out a bloody red warning message to all who visit the summer camp.

Speaking of the camp, the name of this hot wet American summer vacation spot is literally Camp Redwood. Could this be a mere coincidence, or could the color red have a significant part in Season 9

Throwbacks to famous slasher flicks

Was something about the teaser trailers hauntingly familiar? That’s because they are full of homages and references to some of the most popular horror flicks to come out in the ‘80s.

A young woman is attacked and killed in a canoe by a masked killer just like at the end of the original Friday the 13th. Teenagers drink beer and drive like maniacs on their way to enjoy their summer vacation just like at the beginning of the first Evil Dead film. A frightened woman runs through the forest as if she’s being chased by horror legends Jason Voorhees or Freddy Krueger.

Like most of the American Horror Story trailers, however, it’s unlikely that any of the teaser footage will make it into the show itself. It serves merely as a preview of themes and storylines to come.

The interesting thing about these teaser trailers is that they seem almost self-aware. The infamous horror character tropes, like the unlucky nerd and the final girl, make an appearance in each teaser trailer. We know who is going to survive and who is going to get the ax after seeing the characters for the first time since there aren’t many surprises in the corny ‘80s horror genre.

In fact, the teaser that reveals each cast member plays out more like an audition rather than a trailer. Could it be that this season revolves around the production of an ‘80s slasher flick rather than the slasher itself?

The buzz kill himself

Let’s talk about the killer. It’s clear that AHS: 1984 is some sort of homage or love letter to films like Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp. The killer, however, takes an appearance that’s almost entirely unique. In fact, the killer almost seems to stick out in a way that almost takes the viewer out of the scene.

Cloaked by a ski mask and armed with a huge hunting knife, this killer definitely means business. Unlike everything else in the teaser trailers, the killer is wearing mostly camping gear and camouflage, making him look more like a deer-hunting Wisconsinite than an ‘80s slasher villain. The knife he wields sort of resembles the knife that Michael Myers wields in the Halloween franchise…

Like most ‘80s slasher villains, however, this masked fiend is entirely silent and seems to be everywhere at once. Similar to the teaser trailers themselves, the killer almost seems self-aware, often looking directly into the camera. Could his reign of summertime terror be some sort of performance?

There is definitely a lot to unpack and process when it comes to the American Horror Story Season 9 teaser trailers. Could we be on the trail of something huge, or are these clues all red herrings? Either way, Season 9 is sure to be killer.

American Horror Story Season 9 will air on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
