A ‘Devil Wears Prada’ live stage production is coming to Chicago this summer
Fans thought they saw the end of Andy and Miranda’s story. Thankfully, our fashion prayers have been answered. This summer, a musical stage production of this movie is coming to Chicago’s James M. Nederlander Theatre. The cast list for this musical has not yet been announced.
According to Buzzfeed News, “Tony winner Anna D. Shapiro will helm the project as its director, Paul Rudnick is producing the book, Shaina Taub is responsible for lyrics, and Grammy-winning singer Elton John has been tasked with creating the show’s music. Lead producer Kevin McCollum told the Chicago Tribune it was important to Shapiro for the show to premiere in Chicago, though he remained mum on the exact date the show would eventually make its way to New York.”
Is ‘Devil Wears Prada’ coming to Broadway after its run in Chicago?
Devil Wears Prada originally featured award-winning actresses like Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, and Anne Hathaway. According to Buzzfeed, as of right now, there is no official cast list or date for the performances. Unfortunately, Meryl Streep will most likely not reprise her role as the ever calm and powerful Miranda Priestly.
More information will be released periodically. However, this show will enjoy performances from July through August of 2020. Fans living in Chicago were sure to express their excitement on social media.
Some Broadway fans weren’t exactly excited about this news
Of course, when news broke about the Devil Wears Prada, fans took to social media. Some shared their excitement at the upcoming production. One Twitter user wrote, “yes, I have seen the news about the Devil Wears Prada musical and yes I have been screaming about for days. What a welcome, Chicago.”
While some fans shared their excitement at this upcoming production, others stated that they’re tired of movies becoming musicals. There are multiple stage adaptations of musicals currently on Broadway, including Mean Girls and Beetlejuice.
“I’m tired of campy musicals,” said one Twitter user. “I don’t want a Devil Wears Prada musical. I don’t want Spongebob or Mean Girls or whatever. I want a musical that truly, truly means something? A powerful story? What happened to Broadway?”
“Broadway is and has always been commercially driven commercially, and in order to maintain relevance and profit, the shows have to adapt to reflect the wants of the consumer. The licensed musicals are just what’s popular now, and it could very well change in the next few years,” replied another Twitter user.
The Devil Wears Prada musical premieres at Chicago’s James M. Nederlander Theatre on July 14, 2020. More information about tickets and the cast will be announced in the coming months.
