Did ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Reveal This Will Be the Villain in ‘Avengers 5’

Marvel may be heading into Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but in some ways, the studio is in the middle of a reboot. With original Avengers Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) out of the picture, Marvel is launching a slew of new franchises over the next few years, including a set of television shows. While the studio has been tight-lipped about releasing spoilers, fans are convinced that Endgame may have revealed the main villain for Avengers 5.

Who is the next villain for the Avengers?

Marvel has yet to confirm when Avengers 5 will hit theaters, though there are reports that a release date could come as early as 2023. The studio has, however, revealed its full lineup for Phase 4 and fans are excited about seeing some new franchises get off the ground.

While there is still a lot of mystery surrounding Avengers 5, there is one fan theory that suggests Endgame may have already revealed the MCU’s next big bad.

Endgame introduced time travel in a much broader way than we saw in Doctor Strange, setting the stage for its future use in the MCU. One of the rules the movie established is the idea that time travel has consequences.

As Tony put it, “You mess with time, it tends to mess back.”

According to Inverse, that could mean that the next big supervillain of the MCU will be Kang the Conqueror. This legendary villain has a very complex history with the Avengers and is linked with time travel on many levels.

Marvel has not confirmed the theory, but Kang would definitely make for a worthy adversary.

He is also connected to the Fantastic Four, which could open the door for Marvel to introduce the team of superheroes a lot faster than previously expected.

When will ‘Avengers 5’ start production?

With the next Avengers movie not coming until Phase 5 of the MCU, it looks like fans will have to wait a few more years until it hits theaters.  In a recent interview, Endgame executive producer Trinh Tran opened up about Avengers 5 and revealed that Marvel is not in a rush to start production.

Instead, the studio is focusing on projects that are coming out over the next few years, including Black Widow, The Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Marvel is also getting ready to launch a slew of television shows, so the studio has plenty on its plate at the moment.

When the time comes to start production on Avengers 5, Tran revealed that it will not be on the same level as Endgame.  Tran admitted that it will take a long time before they build up to something on the scale of Avengers: Infinity War or Endgame, which means a much smaller scope for Avengers 5.

This is exactly what Marvel did with the first group of Avengers, so it makes sense that they would follow the same formula.

What about those ‘Secret Wars’ rumors?

Aside from a potential villain and a release date, there are rumors that Avengers 5 will feature the Secret Wars storyline from the comics.  The main villain driving this story was Doctor Doom, who was trying to control the Avengers by combining all of the multiverses into one world called Battleworld.

He was eventually defeated by the Fantastic Four, which is why some fans believe Secret Wars is where Marvel is headed after Phase 4.

To add to the rumors, Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have admitted that they would love to do a Secret Wars film – as did directors Joe and Anthony Russo.

Marvel, unfortunately, has not commented on the reports surrounding Avengers 5, and it might be a while before we hear anything new from the studio.

In the meantime, the next movie following Avengers: Endgame is Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, which is due out in theaters on May 1. That film will be followed by The Eternals next November.
