Did Camilla Parker Bowles Give Prince Charles Permission to Marry Princess Diana?
Prince Charles and Princess Diana married in an amazing wedding that most royal fans were likely quite envious of. Diana’s dress is still talked about to this day, called the “closely guarded secret in fashion history,” adorned with sequins, 10,000 pearls, and a 25-foot train.
When the couple became husband and wife, it looked like Diana was living the ultimate fairy tale. After all, how many people get to marry a prince, live in a palace, have two adorable sons, and be greatly loved by people all over the world? Diana appeared to be doing just that, and in addition, she was touching the lives of people who were sick, hurt, and in need.
Although on the surface, the couple appeared to have a perfect life, behind palace doors, all was not as it seemed. Charles remained unfaithful throughout their marriage, carrying on an affair with his mistress, Camilla Parker-Bowles, right under Diana’s nose.
Diana knew of the affair, and she even confronted Camilla on one occasion. However, Charles had met Camilla long before he ever knew Diana, and as a future king, he was being pressured into getting married.
After being involved in a relationship with Diana’s sister, Sarah, the future king went out on a handful of dates with the young, beautiful Lady Diana, even proposing marriage in Camilla’s garden.
With Camilla and Diana both being well aware of each other’s presence in Charles’s life, many people are wondering: Did Camilla Parker-Bowles give Prince Charles permission to marry Princess Diana?
Why did Charles marry Diana?
As a future king, Prince Charles had an obligation to procreate. It was his job to provide additional heirs to the throne, and at the time he met Diana, he was over the age of 30. Everyone, including his mother, Queen Elizabeth, was pressuring Charles to find a wife.
So, why didn’t he marry Camilla if he was so in love with her? Well, the answer is quite simple. Apparently, the royal family felt that she wasn’t aristocratic enough to be Charles’s wife.
Why was Prince Charles being pressured?
At the time, the royals were all about being traditional, and they were insisting that the future king marry someone who was virginal. Diana fit the mold perfectly, and finally, Charles succumbed to the pressure of everyone and asked Diana to be his wife.
She picked out the now iconic 12-carat sapphire and diamond engagement ring that Kate Middleton now wears, and the two were married. Following an extremely rocky marriage, the couple separated in 1992, and finally divorced in 1996, a year before Diana’s death.
It wasn’t until nine years later, in 2005, that Charles married Camilla, who is his current wife.
Did Camilla Parker-Bowles give Prince Charles permission to marry Princess Diana?
Camilla and Charles had carried on an affair for years, and there was no doubt that they loved each other. After all, they couldn’t stay away from one another. Camilla knew that everyone wanted Charles to marry Diana, and she encouraged him to do it as well since she didn’t see her as a threat.
Innocent Diana seemed like the perfect person to join the royal family, and even Camilla agreed. She felt that it was better for Charles to marry someone like Diana than someone braver and outspoken.
Although the marriage between Charles and Diana ultimately ended in divorce, we have to say that we are glad they did get married and have children. We can’t imagine a world without two of our favorite princes, William and Harry, who were the best thing to result from the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
