Did Colton Underwood Open The Door For Future Bachelors and Bachelorettes To Not Get Engaged?

Chris Harrison wasn’t lying when he said that Colton Underwood’s season of The Bachelor was unlike any season we’d ever seen before. No other Bachelor told one of the contestants that he wanted to end up with her when there were still two remaining women. No other Bachelor jumped an eight-foot fence because that woman dumped him. And no other Bachelor completely disregarded ABC’s standard protocol because his relationship felt bigger than the show.

Colton’s season has been over for a little over a month and he and Cassie Randolph seem to be very much in love. They still don’t live together, but Colton made the move to California to be closer to his girlfriend. The couple is still taking their relationship day by day.

Which other Bachelors didn’t get engaged?

Colton was by no means the first Bachelor to not get engaged at the end of his season. Alex Michel, Bob Guiney, Jesse Palmer, Charlie O’Connell, Travis Stork, Lorenzo Borghese, Brad Womack, and Juan Pablo Galavais also decided to hold off on proposals. Many of these Bachelors broke up with their final rose choices shortly after the end of the show.

There’s also been one Bachelorette to end her season without a proposal: Jen Schefft. Both of Jen’s final two suitors proposed but she turned one of them down and the other she told to hold off until they got to know each other a little better. Their relationship also fizzled out shortly after the show ended. During the “After the Final Rose” episode, she officially rejected his proposal, saying the two were better as friends.

The Bachelors and Bachelorettes listed above all chose to not get engaged because they weren’t ready. Colton’s situation differs because he held off on a proposal because he knew Cassie wasn’t ready. Throughout his season, he spoke often about wanting to find his wife and move forward with that part of his life. Cassie, on the other hand, revealed on their final date in Spain, that she wasn’t even sure if she was ready for a relationship.

Based on the track record of other Bachelors who didn’t get engaged at the end of their seasons, Colton and Cassie’s odds don’t look great. But the couple continues to assure Bachelor Nation that they’re taking their relationship slow because they want to increase their odds of success.

Will Colton Underwood encourage future Bachelors and Bachelorettes to not get engaged?

What a weekend.

Colton wasn’t the first Bachelor to not get engaged on the show and he won’t be the last. But he did more than not get engaged–he completely broke show protocol. He jumped a fence to escape production. He wanted to quit the show. There’s a chance Colton’s behavior inspires other Bachelors and Bachelorettes to be a little looser with the show’s rules, too.

Hannah Brown has spoken numerous times about how, despite her young age, she is very ready for marriage. But her latest Bachelorette promo focused solely on who she is as a person, and not her search for “fierce love.” There weren’t even any contestants featured in the video. Is there a chance Hannah B. won’t be getting engaged at the end her season, too? After Colton’s season and now that promo video we wouldn’t be shocked.
