Did Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Start a Religion?
Earlier this year, Kanye West began making headlines for hosting Sunday Services every week. His wife, Kim Kardashian, has been seen at the front line to promote the events and various celebrities — like Katy Perry, David Letterman, and Kid Cudi — have been invited. The services seem to be all the rage in Hollywood as of late.
However, the Sunday Services are actually quite different from the church in several ways — one of which is that only those who have been invited are allowed in. Is this Kim and Kanye’s way of starting a new religion? The two certainly have enough of a following to start one.
What religion are Kim Kardashian and Kanye West?
Before we delve into whether they are starting a new religion, it’s important to understand what religion they have identified as. Both Kim and Kanye have been vocal about the fact that they come from Christian backgrounds.
Kim’s family was actually very religious when she was growing up. Her sister Khloe once shared: “We went to Church every Sunday, religiously. When we started getting older, my dad stopped going to church, but he still read the Bible every single day. Sundays then became about him bringing church into our home. He would play Gospel music – it had so much soul and he loved that.”
To this day, the Kardashian-Jenners still try to keep their faith close by sharing Bible verses with their mother in a group chat.
Kanye, too, is very religious. He has incorporated his beliefs into music with songs such as “Jesus Walks” and “Ultralight Beam”.
Kanye West’s Sunday Services are not considered church
Kanye’s Sunday Services include a few things that can be found in a regular church service, such as a choir and gospel music. However, Kim pointed out that it is not actually a church and the family does not consider it as such.
“It’s more of just a healing experience,” she once shared. “There’s no praying, there’s no sermon, no word, just music, and just a feeling — and it’s Christian.”
Kanye, who started Sunday Services, used to reject Christianity growing up. However, in recent years, he became more connected with his religion and has been proudly spreading the messages of his faith to everyone. “I’m like a vessel, and God has chosen me to be the voice and the connector,” he said.
Kanye’s Sunday Services are perhaps also a different way to worship, especially for people like his younger self who do not identify much with traditional church services.
Are Kanye West and Kim Kardashian starting a religion?
Some people have actually thought about the fact that, instead of being a new church, the Sunday Services seem eerily like a new religion — one that worships Kanye.
The Sunday Services make use of Kanye’s own songs and the gospel performances often have the rapper himself at center stage. People have for a long time considered Kanye as an egotistical artist who thinks too highly of himself, so the thought of him trying to create a religion where everyone worships him doesn’t seem too farfetched.
However, a source close to West said that he is merely trying to help others: “Say what you want about Kanye, but he really does want to help people who need support. He understands brokenness and the need for healing, probably more than most people. He believes in the healing powers of music, but also believes that God can step in and heal people’s brokenness and their issues.”
Since the Sunday Services have only been around for a few months, it’s still too soon to tell what will become of it. Kanye’s Sunday Service on Easter at Coachella drew more than 50,000 attendees — it also served as a platform where Kanye sold merchandise for profit. Only time will tell what kind of next steps Kanye and Kim are planning on taking with their Sunday Services.
