Did Marvel Already Reveal Who Will Be the New Team in ‘Avengers 5’?

With Avengers: Endgame wrapping up a decade’s worth of storytelling, fans are looking forward to Marvel’s next ensemble project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio has been very quiet about its plans for the next Avengers, but clues point towards the next group being made up of a completely new set of superheroes. One theory argues that a group known as the Midnight Sons could form the next Avengers as Marvel heads into supernatural territory.

Marvel takes on supernatural forces

When Marvel released Iron Man in 2008, the studio made sure that all of its original characters were based more on pseudoscience than supernatural forces. Even Chris Hemsworth’s debut as Thor in 2011 talked about how advanced technology is sometimes viewed as magic.

That all changed, of course, with Thor: The Dark World and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, both of which dealt with the realm of sorcery.

The success of Doctor Strange proved that Marvel fans are ready for more supernatural influences in the MCU, which could play out in the studio’s next Avengers film.

Marvel has not said anything about Avengers 5, but some fans are convinced that the studio’s next ensemble will involve a little-known group from the comics called the Midnight Sons – or as some fans have dubbed them, the supernatural Avengers.

A look at the Midnight Sons

According to Screen Rant, the Midnight Sons were introduced in 1992 as Marvel tried its hand at a few supernatural characters. These new superheroes were given their own titles, but they all came under the same branding, much like the Avengers or X-Men.

It was not long before the superheroes united to take on bigger and bigger threats. Eventually, the characters became an informal team that dealt with supernatural problems that Doctor Strange could not handle on his own.

The first characters that teamed up were Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch (Ghostriders), who discovered that Lilith was about to attack Earth. The group has teamed up numerous times since then, with their latest undertaking being 2018’s Damnation storyline.

It should be noted that members of the Midnight Sons are killed off much more frequently than the Avengers, which could make their introduction to the MCU all the more interesting.

Will the Midnight Sons be the next Avengers?

Marvel has not said anything about the Midnight Sons rumors and has not introduced the majority of characters that make up the group. That could change, of course, with the studio set to launch new franchises in Phase 4.

The Midnight Sons are also a relatively unknown group of superheroes, which makes them an unlikely candidate to become the next Avengers. That said, this would not be the first time Marvel has turned lesser characters into something big.

The MCU, for instance, got its start without the studio’s two most popular characters in Wolverine and Spider-Man. It also saw huge success with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, which has already released two films.

Moving forward with the Midnight Sons would also allow Marvel to explore some darker stories from the comics. The studio is already expected to release its first R-rated movie with the next Deadpool, so it would not be that big of a jump for them to start Midnight Sons as well.

Marvel teases a major crossover

Marvel has not revealed its plans for Avengers 5, but the studio has talked about what the next epic crossover might look like.

In a recent interview, Marvel’s Trinh Tran revealed that they are building towards another group project, but the focus right now is exploring all of the new franchises in Phase 4. Marvel president Kevin Feige echoed Tran’s remarks and assured fans that plans for Avengers 5 are already in the works.

“The MCU is all interconnected, but we really focus on one movie at a time,” he shared. “Then, yes, it is always fun to see them come together in a master plan. Which is, I promise you well-underway.”

Feige did not reveal which characters will comprise the next Avengers group, but with all of the new franchises coming to the MCU over the next two years, it is pretty clear that there will more than one fresh face in the mix.

The next movie in Marvel’s lineup is Black Widow, followed by The Eternals. Fans can stream Avengers: Endgame on Disney+.
