Did ‘Mayans MC’ Just Open the Door for a Possible Appearance By ‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Star Charlie Hunnam?

Season 2 of Mayans MC is officially underway, and the season premiere offered a major tease about a potential appearance by Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam). Rumors of Hunnam reprising his most iconic role to date have been circulating ever since Kurt Sutter began working on the Sons of Anarchy spin-off. Sutter has not confirmed Hunnam’s involvement in Mayans MC, but the incorporation of flashbacks opens the door for his potential return. We may have said goodbye to Jax at the end of SOA, but what are the chances that Hunnam reprises the role in an upcoming episode?

‘Mayans MC’ teases Jax’s return

In the Season 2 premiere of Mayans MC, the Mayans continued to strengthen their partnership with SAMCRO. Just like in Sons of Anarchy, Jax’s old biker gang is still supplying the Mayans with guns. To that end, the series brought back Happy (David Labrava) to serve as a liaison of sorts between the two groups.

In one scene, Happy reunites with Chucky (Michael Ornstein), who has been working with the Mayans for a few years. Chucky asks Happy about how things are going in Charming and why the club is still dealing guns. As fans will recall, Jax’s big goal was to get SAMCO out of the gun business, a task he seemingly accomplished at the end of Season 7.

According to Pop Culture, Happy revealed that transitioning out of the gun trade has taken longer than they expected. He also alluded to the idea that there is a lot more at stake than meets the eye. Their chat was quickly stalled when Felipe (Edward James Olmos) arrived asking for EZ (JD Pardo).

It is unclear where Sutter is going with this Mayans MC storyline, but the mention of Jax definitely pulled on the heartstrings for many fans. It also renewed speculation that Jax might return in the form of a flashback.

“I thought Jax wanted you to get out of the gun business,” Chucky asked Happy, who replied, “Transition is taking longer than we thought. There’s a lot at stake.”

Is Happy headed for trouble?

At the end of season 1 of Mayans MC, Felipe and EZ discovered that Happy had something to do with the death of their mother. Felipe’s arrival in the scene with Chucky clearly rattled Happy, who seems to recognize Felipe from somewhere. Later in the episode, Happy returns to Charming, where he rummages through some old files.

One of the documents includes information about Felipe and EZ, and Happy immediately understands that he is the one who killed their mother. The episode concludes with EZ telling Angel (Clayton Cardenas) that he knows exactly who murdered his mom.

There is no telling what will happen with Happy over the next couple of episodes. EZ will likely seek revenge for the death of his mother, which does not bode well for Happy. That said, SAMCRO and the Mayans are still in a partnership, so killing Happy could jeopardize their business arrangement. We also have no idea why Happy killed EZ’s mom, but hopefully it is something that will be explored as the season progresses.

As far as Charlie Hunnam is concerned, perhaps Happy returning to Charming opens the door for his eventual return (in a flashback of course), though only time will tell.

Who else returned for the ‘Mayans MC’ season 2 premiere?

Apart from Happy and Chucky, fans also saw the return of Lincoln Potter (Ray McKinnon) in the season 2 opener. Potter proved to be a worthy adversary to SAMCRO in Sons of Anarchy and is up to his old tricks in the spin-off.

In season 2 of Mayans MC, Potter is still pursuing his contacts within the Galindo cartel. The cartel is helping Potter capture Adelita (Carla Baratta) – or so he thinks. In reality, the Cartel and the Mayans are in cahoots with Adelita and are making deals behind his back.

When it comes to EZ and Angel, they both ended their uneasy dealings with Potter last season, though he does not appear finished with their family business. We do not know what Potter has up his sleeves in season 2, but he has definitely been digging into Felipe’s past. Given everything we know about Felipe and EZ, this could definitely lead him down a dangerous road.

New episodes of Mayans MC air Tuesday nights on FX.
