Meghan Markle looked stunning in the purple dress she wore for her appearance at the opening ceremony of the One Young World summit at the Royal Albert Hall in London, but it turns out she may have been sending a message to Queen Elizabeth with her style choice. Find out how Markle is quietly signaling her thoughts about royal life with this dress.
What’s the significance of purple in royal life?
The color purple has some history in royalty as the dye that originally produced it was once very hard to come by and expensive, so only rulers could afford it.
Queen Elizabeth I even banned anyone other than royal family members from wearing the color because it was associated with wealth and status.
In the 1800s, an English chemist discovered how to create the color synthetically, making it affordable for everyone.
Markle sends a message
In the wake of the emotional interview the duchess gave about coping with the scrutiny of royal life in the new documentary Meghan & Harry: An African Journey, many royal fans wondered about Markle’s future.
Wearing the color purple, many believe, is a secret message Markle is conveying about her determination not to abandon the royal life, despite the pressures that she and Prince Harry experience in the spotlight.
Prince Harry and Markle have planned a six-week break from royal life in November, which prompted more speculation about whether or not they want to leave that life behind for good.
Markle seems to send a clear message in the vibrant purple dress, as it’s a color that is significant in royal history. By wearing the color, many royal watchers believe she was quietly sending the message about her future.
The first year of marriage has been hard for Prince Harry and Markle
The documentary was eye-opening to hear the first-hand accounts of what Prince Harry and Markle have been up against in their first year of marriage, with the duchess calling it “hard.” She added, “I don’t think anybody could understand that.”
She also admitted, “In all fairness, I had no idea, which probably sounds difficult to understand and hear,” recalling that her friends had warned her not to marry Prince Harry because of the tabloids.
Markle explained, “But when I first met my now-husband, my friends were really happy because I was so happy but my British friends said to me, ‘I’m sure he’s great but you shouldn’t do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life.’”
She continued, “And I very naively — I’m American. We don’t have that there — [I said], ‘What are you talking about? That doesn’t make any sense. I’m not in any tabloids.’ I didn’t get it. So it’s been, yeah, it’s been complicated.”
Prince Harry is under tremendous pressure
Prince Harry also shared some of his concerns in the documentary, explaining why protecting his family is so important, given the way his mother, Princess Diana, had to deal with media attention.
He explained: “My mum clearly taught me a certain set of values of which I always try and uphold, despite the role and the job… I think I will always protect my family, and now I have a family to protect.”
Prince Harry continued: “Everything that she went through and what happened to her is incredibly raw every single day, and that is not being me being paranoid. That’s just me not wanting a repeat of the past.”
He added: “If anybody else knew what I knew, be it a father or be it a husband, be it anyone, you would probably be doing exactly what I am doing as well.”
