Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) are going to face a host of new challenges in season 5 of Outlander. As the couple builds a life for their growing family at Fraser’s Ridge, one of the biggest obstacles in their immediate future is the coming American Revolutionary War. Balfe dishes on season 5 of ‘Outlander’

The cast and crew of Outlander are busy working on the new season in Scotland. This year’s run is based on Diana Gabaldon’s book, The Fiery Cross, and will include some events from Snow and Ashes.

The fact that we are getting a mixture of two books means that it is difficult to predict what will happen this season. Balfe’s recent comments at New York Comic-Con, however, may have given us a better idea about what’s ahead for the time-traveling couple.

According to Express, Balfe opened up about Claire’s medical experience in season 5 and revealed that she makes a big discovery. The actress stopped short of revealing too much, but it sounds like something significant is ahead on the medical front.

“She’s created this amazing surgery. It’s a beautiful, beautiful set,” Balfe shared. “I get to do lots of different operations this season and it’s quite cool.”

Balfe asked Outlander producer Maril Davis, who was also on the panel, if she could talk about the subject with fans. When Davis expressed confusion about what she meant, Balfe cryptically asked, “What she finds?”

Davis quickly put an end to the discussion and told Balfe to “skip around it.” We do not know what kind of discovery Balfe was referring to but there are several possibilities to consider.

What’s ahead for the Frasers on ‘Outlander’?

For starters, it is possible that Claire makes a big discovery that relates to her practicing medicine. This could be some kind of tool or device from the future that enables her to work better.

There is no telling how Claire would get ahold of such a device, but it could have been gifted to her by another time traveler. She also could be referring to how, in the books, Claire finds out that Brianna’s (Sophie Skelton) daughter has a heart defect that can only be cured with modern medicine.

As Outlander readers may recall, Claire tells Brianna and Roger (Richard Rankin), to go back to the 20th century so they can get their daughter the help she needs. Although this would separate the Frasers once again, protecting the baby’s health is what really matters.

Whatever happens, Balfe did reveal that fans will get more romance between Claire and Jamie this season, which is definitely a good thing.

This year, the couple’s relationship will get stronger as they face new challenges. In fact, Balfe revealed that their love will expand in season 5 of Outlander and that their support for each other will get even better moving forward.

“They’re there for each other no matter what,” Balfe explained. “They support each other through really tough times and they’re knowledge of each other and how intimately they know what’s going on inside of each other. I think it’s really beautiful.”

Filming for the new season is expected to continue for a few more weeks, which means more spoilers are likely ahead.

Balfe reveals brilliant new episode is ahead

Apart from Claire’s storyline, Balfe also teased fans about an upcoming episode in season 5. Taking to social media, the Outlander star revealed that there will be a “brilliant” episode this season that everyone is going to enjoy.

Balfe’s comments were in response to the news that Gabaldon wrote an episode for season 5. The author has not contributed to the script for several years, and Balfe assured fans that her episode will be worth the wait.

Gabaldon confirmed the news on Twitter, revealing that she took a break from her regular writing duties to pen episode 511. We do not know what the episode will entail, but Gabaldon’s involvement could mean that the new season will be sticking closer to her books than the past two.

Fans were pretty disappointed in season 4 when Jamie and Claire missed their granddaughter’s birth, so let’s hope nothing like that happens this time around.

Unfortunately, we still have a few months to wait until we get a new season of Outlander. season 5 is not scheduled to premiere until February 16.
