Did Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Tarnish Their Brand with Demands for Privacy?
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have definitely faced more than their fair share of criticism over their need for privacy and some people wonder if the couple is actually tarnishing their brand because of it.
Why do Prince Harry and Markle want privacy?
From the way they revealed their baby to the world, to the private christening, and Markle’s request that people not take her photo at Wimbledon, it’s clear that the couple is trying their best to live a normal existence.
Prince Harry is especially protective for a very good reason, as revealed in The Royals documentary series from 2013. Ingrid Seward, editor of Majesty Magazine, shared that the death of Princess Diana had a huge effect on him and Prince William.
She explained: “They hated their mother’s celebrity life and they grew to really hate the photographers that were always surrounding her.”
Have they damaged their brand at all?
Despite all of the criticism over their need for privacy, with some critics noting that they can’t have it all when it comes to being a public figure, one royal expert believes they haven’t “tarnished” their brand, despite their “unhelpful” errors.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Express that their attempts at keeping their lives private might have been “unhelpful,” but things are still alright with their brand.
He explained: “I think there is no doubt there have been a series of instances, the handling of aspects of the way Archie’s birth was reported and certain things we were not told. The christening, and a lot of hush about that. And also the fact, instances, which we might not even have known about, of people being asked not to take photographs in the direction of Meghan at Wimbledon. This sort of thing has been unhelpful.”
He noted: “But, in the long run, it isn’t likely to tarnish what is already a unique brand. They have named their charity Sussex Royal, obviously to be synonymous with the Instagram account which I think has got nine million followers now.”
They still have support from the press and public
Despite their “mistakes,” Fitzwilliams noted, they are still getting support. He explained: “I think it is important they appreciate that the vast majority of the press, I admit a few columnists and vile trolling online, but also the vast majority of the British public wish them well and certainly when it comes to the causes they intend to aspire, they are tremendously important today and for young people most particularly and those with a contemporary outlook.”
He continued: “The fact they also want to, female empowerment, diversity and so forth, that they are championing things that are very significant, and also mental health — which is very very important. What is essential to get your charitable message across is to have populations that are receptive to it.
Fitzwilliams shared that “the press and press intrusion” comes with the territory, noting that it’s “part and parcel of the royal goldfish bowl.” He added: “It is a very difficult line to tread. There’s no doubt there have been some mistakes there.”
