Did Prince Harry’s Royal Exit Bring Prince Charles and Prince William Closer Together?
After the dust has settled from Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry’s exit from the royal family, a lot of attention has been given to how Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge have been handling the transition. One royal expert believes that now that Megxit is behind them, there are signs that Prince Charles and Prince William are becoming closer after the family drama.
Prince Harry and Meghan felt that leaving was their only option
In January, Prince Harry and Meghan dropped a bombshell when they announced they wanted to “step back” from their royal duties. The decision, Prince Harry later revealed, was carefully considered, as the Sussexes didn’t feel like they had any other options to avoid the constant media scrutiny.
Prince Harry noted during a January speech: “The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly. It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges. And I know I haven’t always gotten it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option.”
Prince William and Kate may have some extra work on their plates
With the Sussexes out of the royal picture there is some concern that the Cambridges have to step in and do more work. They’ve had a busy start to 2020 though it’s unclear whether that has much to do with Prince Harry and Meghan leaving.
“Harry and Meghan deciding to up sticks and leave without any thought about how it could affect them is pretty selfish,” a palace source told The Mirror.
The insider added: “If the Sussexes are only here half the year then it will fall to William and Kate to pick up the slack with more engagements, more pressure, and that has not even been considered.”
Has the exit drama brought Prince William and Prince Charles closer together?
Those keeping an eye on all things royal believe that Prince Harry’s departure might make Prince William and Prince Charles closer, with a recent engagement showing some hints that the two are bonding more.
Prince Charles, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Prince William, and Kate attended their first royal engagement together since 2011 and by all appearances, they seemed very happy during their visit to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre.
Prince William joked: “When there’s four of us it’s a nightmare!” and Prince Charles responded: “There’s too many of us!”
According to royal commentator Ingrid Seward, she believes this light-hearted exchange could be telling of a bond the father and son are strengthening. “Harry’s departure from royal life has definitely brought the two of them much closer together,” she told OK! Magazine.
Seward further noted that, in discussing the future of the royal family after Prince Harry and Meghan’s departure, “They’ve had something in common to talk about.”
“Charles has been incredibly supportive of William in recent weeks because he has such a lot going on now and their mutual respect for one another has grown immensely,” Seward added.
Seward further believes that this familial shakeup has shifted the focus for Prince Charles. “I think losing Harry the way he has will have encouraged Charles to focus on William,” Seward explained.
She continued: “Charles tends to jam-pack his diary but he’s now making a real effort to pencil in time for William and will also hope to make time to see more of his grandchildren.”
The father and son having a joke together during their royal engagement, Seward believes, shows that “Charles and William share a great sense of humor.” She added: “They were joshing in the same kind of way as William and Harry would have done in the past — I expect Harry would have been tipping up the wheelchair!,”
