Did Prince William Meet Donald Trump?
The President of the United States typically meets with the British royal family and previous presidents made news with their royal visits. The Obama family seemed especially close to the royals, particularly with Prince Harry, Vogue reports.
But when it came to meeting President Donald Trump, all bets were off. One royal family member is outspoken against the president. “[Prince] Harry thinks the president is a serious threat to human rights,” an insider source told US Weekly. And that Prince Harry “isn’t a fan.”
And while Prince Harry was certain to skip the Trump meeting, which royal family members attended? Most specifically, did Prince Harry’s brother, Prince William meet with Trump?
A royal meeting was nearly impossible
Meeting with any member of the royal family proved to be a challenge for Trump. An initial invitation to meet with Queen Elizabeth sparked a number of U.K. protests. Trump delayed his visit and blamed the Obama administration for the backlash.
A January 2018 attempt was canceled amid pushback from citizens. But Trump tweeted it was for other reasons. “Reason I canceled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for “peanuts,” only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars. Bad deal. Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO!”
Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London tweeted, “Many Londoners have made it clear that Donald Trump is not welcome here while he is pursuing such a divisive agenda. It seems he’s finally got that message.”
But Trump finally met with Queen Elizabeth
In July 2018, the Trumps met with Queen Elizabeth, CNBC reports. The encounter was brief, which included tea for about 25 minutes. Then Trump visited the British royal military academy at Sandhurst followed by talks with Prime Minister Theresa May. The entire visit occurred while protestors took to the streets.
Trump had an extremely awkward interaction with Queen Elizabeth during the meeting. Trump arrived at the meeting late, forgot to bow (First Lady Melania Trump did not curtsy). And then stopped short, which forced the Queen to walk around the Trumps. Some reports were aghast that the Trumps broke protocol. However, according to the British Royal Family’s website, “There are no obligatory codes of behaviour when meeting The Queen or a member of the Royal Family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms.”
But was Prince William there too?
Queen Elizabeth is typically accompanied by another member of the royal family during presidential visits. Usually, Prince Philip is by her side, but Prince Charles has also been standing in quite a bit. But in this instance, not only was Prince Charles absent, Prince William refused to meet with Trump. “This business of Prince Charles and Prince William not being there for the Trump visit was a snub,” a royal insider told The Sunday Times, Town & Country reports. “They simply refused to attend. It’s a very, very unusual thing for the Queen to be there on her own. Usually she is accompanied by somebody. Prince Charles has been substituting for Philip a lot recently.”
Prince William has good reason to snub Trump. In 2012, Trump obsessively and inappropriately tweeted about how Kate Middleton was photographed topless while sunbathing in private.
Trump also called climate change a hoax, an important cause to Prince Charles. However, the Palace asserted, “This was not a state visit and the involvement of other members of the royal family would be different.”
