Did Reese Witherspoon Accidentally Confirm a ‘Big Little Lies’ Season 3?

Big Little Lies premiered on HBO in 2017. The Monterey Five captivated audiences both in Season 1 and Season 2. Though the second season wrapped up in a way that could potentially feel final, fans (and the cast) are hopeful for a third season.

Creator David E. Kelley has said before that Season 2 was the end of it.

“No such plan now,” Kelley said of a third season at the Television Critics Association press tour. “I think that it’s one and two, and we like where our closure is at the end of Season 2, so that will probably be it.”

But also present were Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, who were sure to point out that that’s what Kelley said at the end of Season 1.

“That’s what you said last time,” Kidman told him.

“That is. You sat here and said that last time, David,” added Witherspoon.

What convinced ‘Big Little Lies’ creator David E. Kelley to do Season 2

What convinced Kelley to do a second season of Big Little Lies was the addition of Meryl Streep to the cast.

“Introducing this character who’s being played by Meryl Streep. It’s a delicious character and I felt bringing her in was both liberating and daunting. Daunting because she sets a high bar and you have to measure up, but liberating in that now the show’s not going to be compared to last year. There was freedom in that,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018.

Will there be a Season 3 of ‘Big Little Lies’?

When Kidman spoke to Deadline in 2019 about a third season, she said it all depends on the creators of the show, Kelley and Liane Moriarty. She called them the creative forces behind the project. If they feel they can do the story and characters justice in an artistically beautiful way for a third time, then they just might.

“The muse is Liane, and she will construct something, so it’s left there. And I like how that is, that it’s David and Liane. It’s David’s show. David E. Kelley constructed this show with Liane Moriarty. They built it from the ground up, and it’s their show, and we’ll see if they’re ignited into building a life for these women, and which way they would go next.” said Kidman, “If there is a third one, all of it will come from the writers, and that’s amazing. Liane is deeply talented. David is deeply talented, and the combination of them is extraordinary.”

Reese Witherspoon seems hopeful for Season 3 of ‘Big Little Lies’

But then, in an interview with The Times, Witherspoon joked about having Jennifer Anniston join the cast of Big Little Lies–they were doing an interview together to promote The Morning Show.

“We wrapped The Morning Show, she went directly to another show. There is no hanging out to be done with this hard-working woman,” said Aniston.

“Come on Big Little Lies,” responded Witherspoon. While some fans are hoping this was an admission of future filming plans, it could also just be wishful (hopeful) thinking.

“Nicole would die to have you there. She loves you. She’s always like, ‘How’s Jen?'” added Witherspoon. So it seems like if there is a third season of Big Little Lies, Witherspoon is hoping Aniston is in the cast.

As of now, Big Little Lies Season 3 is unconfirmed.
