Did Sarah Ferguson Admit to Divorcing Prince Andrew for Money?
From Princess Diana’s death to Megan Markle’s family drama, the royal family has seen its fair share of sad, dramatic history. And while there’ve been plenty memorable couples in the family, Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrewmight be the most controversial of them all. The two met thanks to Princess Diana back in the mid-’80s, and they had a whirlwind romance that eventually ended in divorce. Though there may have been some spats between them when they were young, it seems Andrew and Fergie are still attending events together with their royal daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, too.
There’s been plenty of speculation as to what really led to Fergie and Andrew’s divorce. And one interview with Fergie may have just exposed money motivations. Here’s what she said.
Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew have quite the history together
There are plenty of famous couples who’ve made a splash over the years, but no one can forget the blowout Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew experienced. As stated before, Diana invited Fergie to a Windsor Castle event back in 1985, Town & Country reminds us, and that’s when Fergie met Andrew. The two quickly fell in love and announced their engagement in 1986, and they married that same year.
It didn’t take long for things to fall apart for the happy couple, however. Sarah ended up raising Eugenie and Beatrice largely on her own due to Andrew’s demanding Naval career, and the couple only saw each other around 40 days per year. The two legally separated in 1992, and it was that same year that Fergie was a part of a scandal that would follow her forever. Photos were taken of a financial advisor sucking her toes while she was poolside, and this eventually led to a fallout with the royals and a divorce for Andrew and Fergie in 1996.
Did Fergie just reveal she may have divorced Andrew for money?
There’s no doubt Fergie and Andrew really did love each other, as they had an undeniable attraction from the start and have remained amazing friends even after the scandals of the past. And the real reason they divorced has been up for debate. Town & Country notes Fergie became totally estranged from the royals, especially Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, after her photo scandal, which certainly may have influenced her and Andrew’s decision to divorce. Aside from that, however, the Daily Express notes an old interview with Fergie may reveal she had other motivations for divorcing.
The publication notes during a BBC interview with Fergie back in 2008, presenter Michael Parkinson asked her for her reasoning behind the divorce. Fergie said, “Because, I suppose, I ran up a lot of debts and I needed to get out to work. You can’t be a member of the Royal Family and work in this country.” To that, Parkinson added, “Is that why you got divorced?” and Fergie responded that she knew her and Andrew also had their “differences,” which didn’t help. But it seems the primary reason may have been the fallout with the family and the inability to work.
We can’t forget Fergie’s bribery scandal, too
It may seem incredibly out of character for Fergie to divorce Andrew just for money or the ability to work, but we can’t forget that she was also involved in a bribery scandal back in 2010. Oprah.com notes on May 23, 2010, a video was released that showed Fergie accepting a bribe from an undercover reporter. The reporter was willing to give Fergie $40,000 up front followed by another 500,000 British pounds in exchange for information about Andrew.
After the video was leaked, Us Weekly reports Fergie said she had a “serious lapse of judgment” after experiencing financial problems that led her to the bribe. “I am very sorry that this has happened. I very deeply regret the situation and the embarrassment caused,” she added at the time. Despite her financial distress of the past, it seems Andrew didn’t take it too personally, as the two still remain great friends are seen together often today.
