Did Shailene Woodley Win an Emmy for ‘Big Little Lies’?
Based on the Liane Moriarty novel, Big Little Lies was never supposed to be an ongoing series. Rather, the show was intended to be a one-off miniseries when it debuted on HBO in 2017. After all, who would expect stars like Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Laura Dern to commit to a TV show?
Season 2 not only happened but actually added three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep to the mix. Big Little Lies has proven to be a major awards contender, but with such a famous cast, fans might wonder if Shailene Woodley has won any awards for it. After all, her character’s arrival in Monterey kicks off the show’s first episode. Let’s investigate.
What awards has ‘Big Little Lies’ win?
Some fans were concerned when this year’s Emmys came and went with no nominations for Big Little Lies. But don’t worry: the series missed the deadline for submissions. Besides, if the show’s return to the ceremony is anything like its first time out, Big Little Lies is poised to dominate.
In 2017, Big Little Lies Season 1 won eight of the 16 Emmys for which it was nominated. These wins include Outstanding Limited Series, Actress for Kidman, Supporting Actor for co-star Alexander Skarsgård, and Director for Jean-Marc Vallée. Woodley, however, did not win an Emmy for her role as Jane Chapman.
Woodley has been very passionate about what Big Little Lies has to say. Along with her castmates, she has been quite a strong advocate for the series’ message. She’s also gone to great lengths to commit to her performance, making her lack of an Emmy win even more egregious.
Why hasn’t Shailene Woodley gotten Emmy gold?
As the newcomer to Monterey, Jane appears to be the innocent one in the group. That, of course, is unraveled throughout the course of the series, and Woodley captures it beautifully. So why wasn’t she recognized with an Emmy for her work?
As it turns out, Woodley was nominated for Big Little Lies but actually lost the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie statuette to Dern. Shows that have such a gifted ensemble cast tend to face this kind of internal competition. In fact, Woodley suffered a similar fate at the Golden Globes, again losing to Dern.
Normally, having so much great work stuffed into a single program would be an asset. Unfortunately, Woodley couldn’t outshine her own co-workers during awards season. Maybe that will change when season 2’s nominations come around. Then again, remember how we mentioned Streep joined the show?
Does the actress have any other awards?
When it comes to the Emmys, Woodley might not have claimed an award for her work on Big Little Lies. But the actress isn’t a stranger from accolades either. After all, she has previously earned praise for her film career too.
On the big screen, Woodley is probably best known for the heartwrenching YA romance The Fault in Our Stars and the Divergent series. But awards-wise, she’s been most recognized for her breakthrough role in 2011’s The Descendants.
For her role as George Clooney’s daughter in that Alexander Payne-directed film, Woodley earned a ton of awards from critics’ groups. The actress might continue to fall short for her stellar work on Big Little Lies. But with several upcoming projects on the way, she’s bound to grace the awards show stage again soon.
