Did The Biggest ‘Rise of Skywalker’ Spoiler Just Get Leaked?
When it comes to upcoming Star Wars films, fans generally have one or two responses. Some want to preserve the experience of going to see the movie for the first time and being surprised. Other Star Wars fans enjoy learning every spoiler possible about the film before they see it. Disney had images that allegedly contain spoilers removed from Reddit; if the images are genuine, we know major spoilers about The Rise of Skywalker.
What we know about ‘The Rise of Skywalker’
When Kylo Ren was first introduced in The Force Awakens, he was a conflicted character. Though he follows the dark side and idolizes Darth Vader, he still feels the draw of the light side. The following film in the saga, The Last Jedi, introduced the idea that he has a special telepathic bond with the series’ main hero, Rey. The events of the two films convinced many fans that Kylo Ren would be redeemed in The Rise of Skywalker.
The mysterious images
Two images purporting to be from the finale of The Rise of Skywalker were posted on Reddit. It’s not uncommon for fake spoilers to be spread on the internet, however, Disney had these images removed from the site via a copyright claim. This incident led many fans to believe that the images were genuine.
If they are genuine, they spoil a major aspect of the movie. One of the blurry images depicts Rey standing before the throne of Emperor Palpatine. The Emperor is apparently shooting Force lightning out of his fingers, like he did Return of the Jedi, while wearing robes similar to the ones he wore in Revenge of the Sith. Trailers for the film heavily imply that Rey will confront Palpatine.
The second image is more revealing. It shows Rey and Kylo Ren standing side-by-side wielding blue lightsabers. Per established Star Wars canon, blue lightsabers are only used by heroes, not villains, suggesting that Kylo Ren will be redeemed and join Rey to fight Palpatine.
If the images truly depict the ending of the film, they fit in with the information revealed by the trailer. The trailer shows brief shots of Kylo Ren and Rey destroying a mysterious black object together with their lightsabers. It’s not clear if they have totally joined forces in that moment or if they are temporary allies. The trailer also includes a line of dialogue where Kylo Ren tells Rey that he is the only person who really understands her.
Are these images actually from ‘The Rise of Skywalker’?
Of course, there’s also a chance these images are cleverly edited fakes. People with the talent and the time can do amazing things with Photoshop. Perhaps Disney’s decision to get these images removed from Reddit was a clever misdirection designed to earn extra publicity for the film.
This would not be the first time that the Star Wars saga suffered from internet leaks. Prior to the release of The Phantom Menace in 1999, “Weird Al” Yankovic released a song called “The Saga Begins” that summarized the movie. He was able to compose the song relying on internet spoilers. The plot of the film proved to be identical to Yankovic’s song.
