Disney Just Announced ‘Hamilton’ Will Be Shown in Movie Theaters
It looks like the vault at Gringotts finally opened. After years of no release date, Disney and Lin-Manuel Miranda announced a movie of Hamilton featuring the original Broadway cast will be released in theaters on Oct. 15, 2021.
The performance was filmed in 2016
Hamilton opened on Broadway on Aug. 6, 2015. The next year, it set a record with 16 Tony Award nominations. The musical went on to win 11 of the awards including Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Featured Actor in a Musical, and Best Featured Actress in a Musical. It also won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
In the original Broadway cast Miranda played Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. played Aaron Burr, Phillipa Soo appeared as Eliza Hamilton, Renee Elise Goldsberry played Angelica Schuyler, and Christopher Jackson played George Washington.
Daveed Diggs played Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, Okieriete Onaodowan appeared as Hercules Mulligan and James Madison, Anthony Ramos appeared as John Laurens and Philip Hamilton, Jasmine Cephas Jones played Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds, and Jonathan Groff played King George.
The original Broadway cast began to leave in 2016, and Miranda concluded his Broadway run as Alexander Hamilton in July 2016. Before the original Broadway cast moved on to other projects, a performance of the hit musical was filmed.
The film was put in a ‘Gringotts vault’
While fans were told about the filming, no one knew what would happen to the recording of Hamilton. Even Miranda himself did not know what would be done with it. Ever the Harry Potter fan, Miranda teased the film was locked away in a Gringotts vault.
“The show is preserved w this cast & on the way to Gringotts vault. Grateful to everyone who made a complex shoot painless. Rest easy, fam,” he tweeted.
In another tweet, he wrote, “2) What are we doing with that footage? No idea. Throwing it in a vault at Gringotts for a bit probly. But we’re getting it.”
Disney will release ‘Hamilton’ as a movie
On Feb. 3, 2020, Disney announced the recording of Hamilton with the original Broadway cast will be released as a movie. The movie will come out in theaters on Oct. 15, 2021.
“Lin-Manuel Miranda created an unforgettable theater experience and a true cultural phenomenon, and it was for good reason that ‘Hamilton’ was hailed as an astonishing work of art,” said Disney CEO Bob Iger. “All who saw it with the original cast will never forget that singular experience. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to share this same Broadway experience with millions of people around the world.”
After the announcement, Miranda expressed how happy he is Disney will be distributing the film.
“I fell in love with musical storytelling growing up with the legendary Howard Ashman-Alan Menken Disney collaborations — ‘The Little Mermaid,’ ‘Beauty and The Beast,’ ‘Aladdin,'” Miranda said. “I’m so proud of what Tommy Kail has been able to capture in this filmed version of ‘Hamilton’ — a live theatrical experience that feels just as immediate in your local movie theater. We’re excited to partner with Disney to bring the original Broadway company of ‘Hamilton’ to the largest audience possible.”
