Disney Just Revealed a New ‘Mandalorian’ Character for Season 2

Recent Star Wars films have garnered a polarized reaction. The Mandalorian, on the other hand, is well-liked by most of the franchise’s fandom. Audiences have been clamoring to learn about the show’s upcoming second season. Here’s when the season will be released – and what director Jon Favreau had to say about it.

‘The Mandalorian’ gets a new alien

According to People, Favreau tweeted “Season 2 of #TheMandalorian coming Fall 2020.” It appears fans won’t have to wait too long for the show’s second season. What was more interesting than the tweet was the image accompanying it.

Alongside the tweet, Favreau posted a picture of a Star Wars creature. The creature has a green, humanoid body and a porcine face. The character is slated to appear in upcoming episodes of The Mandalorian.

Why fans like Gamorreans

According to People, the character is a member of a Star Wars race of aliens known as the Gamorreans. Gamorreans were first introduced in the 1983 film Return of the Jedi, where they served as guards in Jabba the Hutt’s palace. Gamorreans are given no intelligible dialogue, however, their design – which borders between cute and grotesque – have made them an object of fascination for many Star Wars fans. Their piggish appearance makes sense as their master, Jabba, is animalistic, gluttonous, and greedy.

The horrible fate of the most prominent Gamorrean also sparked fan interest in the species. In one memorable scene, a Gammorean becomes a snack for Jabba’s giant pet monster, the Rancor. The loud sound of the Rancor biting through a Gammorean’s bones shocked audiences with its brutality.

The scene had an impact on a prominent Star Wars fan. On Dec. 19, 2019, Yahoo! Movies published an interview with television personality David Whiteley. Whitley has hosted two Star Wars documentaries: The Galaxy Britain Built and Toy Empire: The British Force Behind Star Wars Toys. Gammorreans formed a major part of his early Star Wars memories. “I remember being in the third row and being absolutely terrified when the Rancor ate the Gamorrean guard. The noise that made echoed around the whole cinema.”

What does a Gammorrean character mean for ‘The Mandalorian’?

What does the appearance of a Gammorrean in The Mandalorian mean for the show? Could this mean an episode of the show will take place in Jabba’s Palace? Jabba dies before the events of The Mandalorian, but his palace is likely intact and it would make sense for someone else to overtake his crime syndicate following his demise.

On the other hand, the Gammorrean from Favreau’s tweet does not dress like one of Jabba’s guards. Instead, he’s wearing what appears to be a loincloth. Loincloths are often associated with tribal peoples. Perhaps this costume choice reveals Gammorreans are generally tribal, meaning the guards working at Jabba’s palace were outliers.

There’s a million directions Disney could take this character and this new season. It’s fun to speculate. Hopefully, the new season will be similar to the new character’s design: indebted to the past while interesting in its own right.
