Everything We Know About the Live-Action ‘Lady and the Tramp’

Disney has already released live-action remakes of CinderellaThe Jungle BookPete’s Dragon, and Beauty and the Beast, and the studio has plenty more in the works for the next few years. One of those is a remake of Lady and the Tramp, and some recent casting news indicates that it’s going to be a bit different than the original.

So what do we know about this live-action Lady and the Tramp so far? Let’s take a look at every detail we’ve learned.

It’s not coming to theaters

The first thing you should know about the new Lady and the Tramp is that unlike all of the recent Disney live-action remakes, it’s not actually going to come to theaters. Instead, Lady and the Tramp is going to make its debut on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, as reported by Deadline earlier this year.

The film doesn’t yet have an official release date, but the streaming service itself will launch in fall 2019, so we should expect it sometime around then. This won’t be a case where Lady and the Tramp releases in theaters first and then goes streaming, or it releases in theaters and on the streaming service at the same time. According to Deadline, it won’t get a theatrical release of any kind.

It will be a mix of live-action and CGI

It looks like Disney is aiming for the same style as Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book with this movie.

The film will be a mixture of live-action and CGI, with some actors portraying human characters but with the animals all being computer animated. Presumably, it will be similar to The Jungle Book where the animals look fairly realistic and not cartoony.

Justin Theroux will voice Tramp, but Lady hasn’t been cast

At the end of July, Justin Theroux boarded the project, being cast as the voice of Tramp in the film.

Currently, though, Disney has still not made a decision on who will voice Lady. Production is reportedly scheduled to begin this fall, so we’ll definitely hear something on this front soon.

Ashley Jensen voices a female version of Jock

In the original 1955 Disney cartoon, Jock is a male Scottish Terrier and a neighbor of Lady. In the remake, Jock will instead be a female Scottish Terrier named Jackie.

Ashley Jensen is currently in talks to voice Jackie, according to Deadline.

Kiersey Clemons will reportedly play Darling

The latest bit of casting news came this week, when Variety reported that Kiersey Clemons will be playing Lady’s owner, Darling.

Clemons, who recently co-starred with Nick Offerman in Hearts Beat Loud, is the only actor who has been confirmed for a live-action human role in the movie so far.

It’s being directed by Charlie Bean and written by Andrew Bujalski

The director of the new Lady and the Tramp is Charlie Bean, who recently made his directorial debut with The Lego Ninjago Movie. Beforehand, he had been working in animation as a storyboard artist and writer for decades on shows like Batman: The Animated SeriesAnimaniacsDexter’s Laboratory, and The Powerpuff Girls.

Meanwhile, the screenplay for Lady and the Tramp will be written by Andrew Bujalski. He’s definitely an interesting choice, as unlike Bean, he has never worked on a project like this before. Instead, his background mainly includes independent “mumblecore” movies like Support the Girls and Computer Chess.

It remains to be seen whether this will be a fairly faithful adaptation like Beauty and the Beast, or whether it will dramatically change the source material like the upcoming Mulan remake.
