It’s time to go back to China with Mulan, in Disney’s upcoming adaptation of their animated film
Let’s get down to business, Disney fans. Hot off the heels of live-action adaptations Aladdin and The Lion King, this company has another remake up their sleeves. This one tells the story of Hua Mulan, who, dressed as a man, enlists in the military to save her father.
The 2020 adaptation of Mulan stars actress Liu Yifei as the title character. Though there have been many speculations about this upcoming movie, primarily regarding the cast of characters and the film’s soundtrack. However, Disney confirmed some suspicions with the film’s official trailer, which released on YouTuber during December 2019. Within a month, it earned almost 10 million views.
Will Disney’s live-action ‘Mulan’ be different from the animated film?
While this film celebrates the Disney animated version of Mulan, it combines some aspects of Chinese culture and the original story of the fierce warrior, now named Hua Mulan. The trailer for the 2020 release already introduced a new villain to the story — a villainous sorceress, Xian Lang.
“I am a fan of Mulan. China had this animation and later on Disney had its own version,” actress Gong Li said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “In this film, I act as a wizard who can become a hundred thousand eagles. So Disney making this film from this foreign point of view of this ancient Chinese female hero — I think it’s a really good thing.”
While there are some new characters, there are a few old friends missing from this film, (we’re looking at you, Mushu.) The official trailer does give a nod to Mulan’s song, “Reflection,” having an instrumental version play in the background at one point.
When does Disney’s live-action ‘Mulan’ premiere in theaters?
It’s been a few months since Disney announced their cast list for this live-action remake. Now, fans finally have a release date for Mulan. The film is set to premiere on March 27, 2020, over 20 years after the release of Disney’s animated film. During one interview, the director of this film commented on the cultural aspects intertwined with Mulan.
“In all my work that is centered in cultures not my own, I hope that comes through because that is incredibly important to me,” director Niki Caro said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “… As the projects get bigger, the more certain I am that cultural authenticity and specificity is the only way to approach my work.”
