Times have changed. Even in fantasy, some of the magic is gone, Ian and Barley’s father explain to them. In Disney and Pixar’s Onward, two brothers go on an adventure together to have one more day with their father, who passed away.

This movie stars Tom Holland (Ian Lightfoot) and Chris Pratt (Barley Lightfoot) as the main characters. Julia Louis-Dreyfus portrays Laurel Lightfoot. The movie’s groundbreaking character named Officer Spencer is voiced by Lena Waithe. Ian and Barley meet a few other friends along the way.

“I took about 20 people to a screening – half of them children. Everybody left saying it was their favorite movie ever. Lot of grown man tears. You have made something so very special. Cannot wait for the rest of the world to see your story,” Chris Pratt tweeted. “Really proud of this one!”

‘Onward’ premieres in theaters during March 2020

The wait is almost ofter, Disney fans. This animated film premieres in theaters on March 6, 2020. Onward is the first in a slew of non-sequel Pixar movies coming after the studio released blockbuster films like Finding Dory, Incredibles 2, and Toy Story 4. Another Disney-Pixar film, Soul, is set for its theatrical debut during June 2020.

Pixar has also periodically released original content on Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+, including Forky Asks a Question and Lamp Life. It’s unclear when, or if, Onward will be added to the Disney+ streaming library. Presumably, the movie will enjoy its run in cinemas before it appears on Disney’s subscription service.

What was the inspiration for the ‘Onward’ fantasy setting?

Onward is partly fantasy and partly modern times. Still, this animated movie is 100% fun, even featuring Disney and Pixar’s first openly LGBTQ animated character. Screenwriter and Director Dan Scanlon commented on the upcoming Pixar movie during an interview with Screenrant. Turns out, the idea came from experiences in his own life.

“We wanted to tell this personal story and we did know we wanted to tell the story about these kids getting this chance to meet their dad. And we thought, well, that’s magic. I don’t know how else you do it,” Scanlon said.

“And that did lead to the fun of like, ‘What if this was a fantasy story? And what if it was a very modern one?’ And that got me interested because then it was inherently a comedy-fantasy story,” he continued. “And a lot of the stuff I had read or seen was, was very serious and I thought, ‘I haven’t seen too much – I mean, people have done it but – too much done this way comically and done in a cartoon way where the designs are cartoony.”
