Disney+: What Is Marvel’s ‘What If…?’
Marvel’s What If…? — set to feature the cinematic universe’s most beloved heroes, as well as the actors tied to each one (well, their voices at least) — is shaping up to be one of the most highly-anticipated original shows coming to Disney+. What If…? won’t be arriving to the streaming platform until the summer of 2021; however, the alt-reality-based anthology is sure to gain its fair share of followers.
What If…? will be an animated series that explores what would have happened if Marvel’s history — what is considered canon to the comic book world — played out differently.
With Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Natalie Portman, and more all coming back to voice their superhero counterparts, it’s sure to feel like a grand Avengers reunion when it finally hits the small screen (in a few years from now). So, let’s dive into the source material the show will be based on, and what we know about the upcoming series to give you an idea of what to expect.
The inspiration behind the Disney+ show ‘What If…?’
What If…? was a comic book series that ran from 1977 until 1984, according to Inverse; the series was a non-canonical thought experiment that presented fans with fun-to-imagine and exciting-to-ponder alternative Marvel realities. For example, what if Peggy Carter became the next Captain America. Or, what if Spider-Man joined the Fantastic Four in an epic battle? Do you see how the title came about?
What If…?, in a fashion similar to the comic book series, will get its kicks off exploring timelines that could never come to be in the actual, canonical Marvel world. However, the show will likely pick and choose some of the most famous stories, as unimaginable team-ups will take you straight to the heart of a Marvel enthusiast.
During SDCC, Kevin Feige informed fans that the Peggy Carter plotline, where she becomes Captain America, will be one of the narratives explored. The show will also reveal what happened when Tony Stark’s father made an Iron Man suit for Captain America.
The creative forces behind the Disney+ show ‘What If…?’
Aside from the incomparable cast, which will include several actors from the Marvel universe reprising their roles in voice-over form, the series also has Jeffrey Wright set to narrate. Wright is most known for his starring roles in Westworld, O.G., and the most recent version of Shaft.
Created by A.C. Bradley, What If…? will be produced by Andrew Egiziano and Kevin Feige. Bryan Andrews is set to direct. Andrews is most known for his work within the science fiction community; he co-created the animated series Sym-Bionic Titan and worked on Star Wars: Clone Wars. Andrews is quite established in the animated and superhero spaces.
While not much else is know about What If…? as of today, given the talented team behind the production, it’s destined to be an animated masterpiece, exploring various timelines that fans could never have imagined hitting the small or silver screen.
